Kate Middleton was reportedly “in tears” over a detail in relation to her wedding dress that was spilled ahead of her nuptials to Prince William back in 2011.

April 29 marks the Prince and Princess of Wales’ 14th wedding anniversary. The special day was watched by almost 18 million around the world, with 1,900 guests invited to the ceremony. Even Kate’s ex-boyfriend received an invite to the royal wedding!

Kate Middleton in ‘tears’ the lead up to her wedding to Prince William

A royal expert claimed that Kate was apparently “in tears” prior to her wedding to Prince William in 2011.

Following the announcement of their wedding, the press and the public were desperate to find out as many wedding details as they could before the big day.

Some secrets leaked out, including one that reportedly brought the Princess of Wales to tears.

Like most brides, Kate wanted to keep the designer and style of her dress a secret until she walked down the aisle. However, the press had other ideas and managed to find out that Sarah Burton had designed Kate’s dress.

Sarah is the creative director of Alexander McQueen, and also designed her second wedding dress she wore to her reception.

Secret was leaked in the press

Katie Nicholl, a royal expert, and author of The Making of a Royal Romance, revealed that the leak of the secret of her dress made the royal cry.

Speaking on Vanity Fair’s royal podcast, Dynasty, Katie said: “The secrecy surrounding it [the dress]… I remember trying so hard to find out who the designer was – every journalist on the planet was.

“And I think hats off to The Sunday Times who revealed it was Sarah Burton for McQueen ahead of the big day, which apparently had Kate in tears behind the scenes, which perhaps hints at some of the stress that she went through in the run-up to the royal wedding.”

She then continued, saying: “And on the day itself, it didn’t really matter, she stepped out of the car and she looked absolutely beautiful.”

A statement released by Buckingham Palace at the time revealed that Kate had worked closely with Burton on the design.

The floor-length ivory dress had long sleeves and a handmade lace-applique bodice. The circle skirt was also handmade, and crafted by the Royal School of Needlework.

Kate had the rose of England, thistle of Scotland, daffodil of Wales and Shamrock of Ireland stitched into the tulle of the skirt, honouring the four nations of Great Britain.

The dress featured a narrow waist and pads at the hip, McQueen’s signature design.

To top off the look, the future queen wore a Cartier halo diamond tiara, which was given to the late Queen in 1936 by her mother on her wedding day. Attached to the tiara was a full veil, made from Chantilly lace.

Her dress also had a train that measured nine feet (2.7 metres) long.
