But why were he and Prince Harry dressed differently to everyone else?

Prince Andrew came under fire from royal fans as he was ‘booed’ by crowds at his brother King Charles‘ coronation today (May 6).

The historic event crowning King Charles took place at Westminster Abbey in London. However, as the Duke of York arrived for proceedings by car, some boos were reportedly heard by those lining The Mall and waiting to catch a glimpse of the royals.

Meanwhile, on social media, users drew comparisons between Prince Andrew and the monarch’s second son, who also didn’t appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony to wave to well wishers.

As well as reportedly being subjected to catcalls, what Prince Andrew wore also came under scrutiny.

Having been stripped of formal duties and ceremonial honours by his late mother in January 2022, Prince Andrew was dressed in velvet Knight of the Garter robes. He stepped back from royal duties amid a US civil action over sexual assault allegations.

Prince Andrew also settled a civil sexual assault case with his accuser Virginia Giuffre last year, with reports suggesting she was paid £12 million.

What are Prince Andrew’s robes and what do they mean?

Meanwhile, Twitter users pointed out that Harry – who also stepped back from royal duties as part of ‘Megxit’ – only wore a suit for the coronation ceremony.

Neither appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony, with only a ‘slimmed down’ group of senior royals making the traditional appearance.

One fan asked: “Why was #PrinceAndrew permitted to wear his Garter robes, but not #PrinceHarry?”

Another wrote: “This country will forever baffle me. Prince Harry arriving alone to his father’s coronation with nothing but the medals he EARNED. While Prince Andrew, who is also a non-working royal, with no official role in today’s events, arrived in full order of the garter robes. BAFFLED.”

A third person posted: “So Prince Andrew is in his pomp and circumstance robes but Prince Harry isn’t. It’s like King Charles is saying to him: ‘Sorry son, but [blank] you.'”

But yet another user highlighted: “The robes are because Prince Andrew is a member of The Order of The Garter and is entitled to wear them. Prince Harry is not a member of The Order of The Garter, hence morning dress.”

Prince Andrew’s future as a royal

Reports claimed last month that King Charles ‘could bring his brother in from the cold’. It was also speculated the monarch may use his coronation to ‘mend family divisions.’

A source is reported to have told the Telegraph that King Charles was in a ‘forgiving mood’. Furthermore, he is said to have planned to bring his family together on his big day.

The unnamed insider added: “There’s a warmth around the place and a proper rallying around the King. Who in turn is showing some serious EQ by ensuring the family is given the opportunity to pull together.”
