The former actress has also had an uneasy relationship with the Princess of Wales Kate Middleton. However, their beef began long before Meghan’s marriage into the royal family. King Charles walked Meghan down the aisle, but she was no ‘blushing bride’ over his gesture. At the Sussexes wedding, it seemed like all was good in the family. However, a lot was brewing under the surface. A lot of it came to light in Harry’s 2023 memoir Spare.
Prince William’s remarks about Meghan that ‘hurt’ Harry
On a night in 2016, the Duke of Sussex told his brother and sister-in-law, Kate, about his newfound love with Meghan. However, Prince William made a comment that “hurt” Harry. The Prince of Wales asked his little brother to “slow down.” It was apparently a remark that William reportedly later regretted. However, there was something else he said that hit Harry’s nerve.
The now 42-year-old future King said, according to Harry: “She’s an actress after all, Harold. Anything can happen” per Showbiz Cheatsheet. The now-father-of-two responded with a nod, feeling “a bit hurt” before hugging William and Kate goodbye. Harry confessed to feeling a “big hurt” due to William’s comments in his book.
In another conversation about Meghan, William warned Harry how a relationship with an “American actress,” could bring “a host of difficulties” into his life. The Duke says that his brother made the term “sound like ‘convicted felon”.
The other time William’s words crushed Harry was when he sent a text to his now estranged brother after the family moved to the United States.
Harry says Meghan’s profession ‘clouded’ their judgment
In their 2022 Netflix series, the Sussexes talked about introducing Meghan to the royals for the first time. Harry noted that most of his family members were impressed after first meeting with Meghan, writes The Daily Express.
“I remember my family first meeting her and being incredibly impressed,” Harry said. “Some of them didn’t quite know what to do with themselves. Because, I think, they were surprised. They were surprised that a ginger could land such a beautiful woman and such an intelligent woman.”
However, he also noted how Meghan being an actress clouded the royal’s judgment. “But the fact I was dating an American actress was probably what clouded their judgment more than anything else at the beginning,” he said. “‘Oh, she’s an American actress; this won’t last.’”
Meghan also opened up about being “typecast” as an “American actress.”
“There is a big idea of what that looks like from the UK standpoint — Hollywood — and it’s just very easy for them to typecast that,” Meghan once said.
