When Meghan Markle declared her love for Prince Harry in a major magazine interview, it could have been a significant misstep given the royal family’s strict rules regarding private matters.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry revealed the ins and outs of their courtship and battles for privacy in their Netflix documentary and the Duke’s memoir, Spare.

Since the bombshell releases, the couple has avoided any interviews regarding their personal lives, suggesting that they were the last time that the Sussexes would be commenting on their rift with the royal family.

This is far from the circumstances in September 2017, 10 months after the prince confirmed he was dating the Suits actress. Markle proclaimed her love for Harry in a Vanity Fair interview which could have become a dilemma.

Outspoken Meghan Markle declared her passion for Harry in major interview

In honor of Suits’ 100th episode, beloved TV actress Meghan unexpectedly got candid for the first time about falling in love with a royal family member.

“We’re two people who are really happy and in love,” she told the publication. “We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception. Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”

The confession followed Harry’s public statement telling the press and public to stop the “wave of abuse and harassment”

The official announcement claimed Markle was the victim of tabloid news with “racial undertones” and “outright sexism and racism of social media trolls”.

When asked about the new public attention, the then 36-year-old revealed that brushed off the scrutiny with help from her “boyfriend’s support”.

“It has its challenges, and it comes in waves – some days it can feel more challenging than others,” she says. “And right out of the gate, it was surprising the way things changed. But I still have this support system all around me, and, of course, my boyfriend’s support.”

Meghan’s bold statement showed she ‘wore the trousers’ in her romance

The revealing interview came as a shock to fans as royals have never discussed personal matters so openly, which could have jeopardized their romance.

The prince and his PR team likely knew it was coming – and so must have approved her going public, writes Angela Levin, author of Harry, Conversations With A Prince.

“I believe she was so confident of his love that she was just trying to force his hand a little, partly because at 36, her biological clock was ticketing rather fast,” she says.

Questions arose over whether she accepted the interview before Harry informed Queen Elizabeth II and Charles, but the royal biographer says that it “didn’t matter” and perhaps even indicated “who might wear the trousers in their relationship.”
