Whilst in the UK in 2013, three years before meeting Prince Harry, and still starring in Suits, Meghan Markle is claimed to have shown a photo of the footballer to a reporter she was having rooftop drinks with. Here’s what ‘apparently’ went down, and what Ashely’s brother has said on the matter.
Ashley Cole asking Meghan Markle on a date pure ‘nonsense’ brother claims
The encounter, between Meghan and the journalist, was written about by Andrew Morton in the first ever biography of the Duchess, Meghan: A Hollywood Princess.
In 2013, four years before joining the royals, the now 42-year-old’s first marriage had ended with movie producer, Trevor Engelson.
As a newly single Meghan visited the UK, she reportedly showed a picture of soccer star Ashley Cole, on her Twitter account, who was previously married to music star Cheryl Cole.
“Do you know this guy, Ashely Cole? He follows me and keeps trying to talk to me on Twitter. He’s trying really hard.”
She then claimed he wanted to go for a drink while she was in London and asked reporter Katie Hind, what she thought.
As most people in the UK were aware, Ashley and Cheryl Cole had a very public breakup in 2010, with allegations he had cheated. Once this info was relayed to the now Duchess, she also claimed some of her friends and warned her too, saying she’d “leave it.”
However, the former Chelsea player’s brother Matty Cole came out in 2019 saying the claims were “nonsense.”
“It’s nonsense, completely made up. He definitely wouldn’t have to beg Meghan Markle for a date. She’s not the kind of girl he goes for anyway, and he’s never fancied her,” he told The Sun.
Meghan Markle reportedly ‘loved British men’
In the book, reporter Katie Hind told the author that the conversation between herself and Markle turned to men as she had a “keen interest in British men of a certain, well standing.”
This claim was also backed up by Meghan’s friend Lizzie Cundy who claimed she was “eager to find a British boyfriend.”
Speaking on the Channel 5 TV documentary, Meghan and Fergie: Inconvenient Royals, Lizzie who got on with Meghan “like a house on fire,” said:
“She loved London, she loved British men, she wanted a British boyfriend and she wanted to work in London.
“I could help her get to the right places and meet the right people.”
Meghan had also publically spoken about her love for the UK, however, by 2020, she had moved back to the US with her husband Harry, in their $15m LA mansion nestled in a celebrity hotspot.
