Kate Middleton joined the royal family when she married Prince William in 2011, but the move to royalty wasn’t the only big claim, as it’s reported she was asked to change the spelling of her full name.

Since leaving the royal family, Prince Harry released his memoir Spare, and amongst all the family drama claims, he also writes that his father, King Charles, and his stepmother Camilla, asked Kate to change the spelling of her name to ‘avoid confusion.’

Kate Middleton asked to ‘change spelling’ of her full name

In his memoir Spare, Harry claimed that King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla asked Kate Middleton to spell her full name differently.

It’s claimed the couple wanted the Princess of Wales to spell Catherine with a K instead of a C to avoid confusion, over the use of cyphers. If Kate were to use a ‘C’ all three of them would use the same letter.

In the memoir, the Duke of Sussex wrote: “There were already two royal cyphers with a C and a crown above: Charles and Camilla. It would be too confusing to have another.”

He writes that his father and stepmother suggested she “make it Katherine as a K,” as he wondered what would come of the suggestion.

Harry writes that Prince William looked “blank” at the suggestion.

As of the time of writing, Kate’s full name is written as Catherine, Princess of Wales. She’s not the only family member who uses a shortened version of her name.

Prince Harry himself uses a shortened version of his full name, Henry Charles Albert David.

Prince Harry’s Spare came out in January 2023, the royals, no individual or Buckingham Palace, have responded to any claims from the book.

Charles and Kate have a ‘very close bond’

No bad blood came from the alleged conversation of course, as Kate and her father-in-law are said to have a close bond.

He described her as his “beloved daughter-in-law” during His Majesty’s speech at his state visit to Kenya in November.

Now, as the King celebrates his birthday, the Prince and Princess of Wales have shared a special tribute to him on their Instagram page, as they penned: “Wishing His Majesty The King a very happy 75th birthday!”

They then posted three throwback photos, one including Charles with the couple, and their three children, waving on the Buckingham Palace balcony, at Trooping the Color in June.

The event marked the first official birthday parade of King Charles’ reign.
