Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been staying away from the UK after stepping down from royal duties in 2020. But royal authors claim the distance between The Firm, Harry and Meghan Markle started growing long before that. One particular event where Kate Middleton‘s decision became center stage seemed like ‘she upstaged’ Meghan. And it was none other than firstborn Archie‘s christening day.
Meghan Markle fans were upset over Kate ‘upstaging’ her
Royal authors Dylan Howard with Andy Tillett write in their book, Royals at War, how Kate Middleton’s jewelry on Archie’s christening day upset the fans of the Duchess of Sussex. They later accused the Princess of Wales of upstaging the former TV star.
Kate Middleton chose to wear the same earrings Princess Diana had worn to Harry’s christening in 1984. It was a small tribute to the Princess, but fans of Meghan found the Kate Middleton’s gesture disrespectful.
The authors showed examples of fan sentiments from the day on social media, as one fan wrote: “In all honesty, I think Kate was a tad bit disrespectful and spiteful. She didn’t have to come there sporting Princess Diana’s earrings. I believe she did that intentionally to upstage Meghan’s special moment.”
Kate Middleton and Prince William were ‘offended’
While it is unclear how Meghan personally felt about Kate Middleton sporting Princess Diana’s earrings on Archie’s christening day, sources on the other end say Wills and Kate were upset before that. Insiders who are close to Prince William and Kate say the royal couple were ‘offended’ by Harry and Meghan’s decision not to let them see Archie until a week after his birth.
Body language experts pointed out how William, who is usually smiling at family occasions appeared stern. The royal authors added William’s “aloof stance, his folded arms, and tense facial expression” proved his unhappiness at the situation and “clearly he was no longer worried about hiding it.”
The author claimed the ‘confusing’ ways Meghan withheld updates of Archie’s birth “only managed to further alienate her husband’s brother and wife in the bargain.”
Kate Middleton has worn more than just Princess Diana’s earrings
It’s not uncommon for the Princess of Wales to pay tribute to her late mother-in-law.
During King Charles coronation, she honored both Lady Di and the late Queen. She wore a layered diamond necklace, from Queen Elizabeth II, which was passed down from King George VI to his daughter in 1950.
The mom-of-three also wore pearl and diamond drop earrings, which were Diana’s.
Last week, for her keynote speech at Shaping Us National Symposium in London, she did it again. Kate wore sapphire and diamond drop earrings that also belonged to William’s mom. They match her engagement ring, the same statement piece Charles proposed to Diana with decades ago.
