It’s no secret Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle don’t have the best sisterly relationship, and it may have all started upon the ‘first meeting’, which led to the Duke of Sussex only referring to the Princess by her nickname moving forward.

Since leaving the royals in 2020, the Sussexes have spoken out about their time in the firm and their relationship with the rest of the family. In Prince Harry‘s memoir Spare, he didn’t hold back about the ‘strained’ relationship between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, detailing her absence from the ‘initial meeting’.

Meghan Markle ‘only refers’ to Catherine Middleton by her ‘nickname’ – Kate

In his bombshell memoir Spare, the Duke opened up about the moment he first introduced his brother, Prince William, to his future wife.

Harry claimed that during this moment, Kate Middleton stayed in the garden, playing with the children, which is hardly the welcome either of them wanted.

Although, that’s what was thought. However, it has since been revealed, once again, a royal book was ‘lost in translation’.

It has recently come out a Spanish book translated the words as Kate being outside in the garden, rather than out away from the home altogether with the kids. However, it shows either way, Kate was not present at the first meeting.

He then claimed from that point onwards, Meghan ‘insisted’ on calling the Princess “Kate”, her nickname, instead of Catherine Middleton, which is what the rest of the family refer to her by.

Although William was present at the meeting, his younger brother claimed he ‘aired some concerns’ about Meghan “very early on.” However, he denied his brother tried to dissuade him from tying the knot with the former Suits actress.

“No, he never tried to dissuade me from marrying Megan, but he aired some concerns, very early on and said, you know, this is gonna be really hard for you,” he recalled in an interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby.

He admitted “still to his day” he doesn’t know what he was talking about, “but maybe he predicted what the British press’s reaction was gonna be.”

It’s not the only difficulty Kate faced with her name

It was claimed her father-in-law, King Charles asked her to change the spelling of her full name to avoid confusion over the use of cyphers.

If Kate were to use a ‘C’ she would be the third, as the King and his wife, Queen Consort Camilla would also be using the same letter.

Harry wrote his father and stepmom suggested she spelled “Catherine with a K,” although it looks like nothing came of the suggestion. Instead, Princess Kate is usually used.
