According to a royal biographer, the couple could be preparing for their royal futures “sooner than expected”.

It’s no doubt been a tough year for the royal family. King Charles was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in February 2024. Kate then shared her cancer diagnosis publicly in March.

He and Kate have been preparing for their future roles sooner than they would have expected.

The pair underwent treatment for much of the year. Kate completed hers in September, while the king continues to have his.

Sally Bedell Smith, who has written many books on the royals, has suggested the king has had to “accept limitations during his cancer treatment”.

Speaking to People magazine, Sally explained: “Although the king is carrying out his duties with typical determination, he has had to accept limitations during his cancer treatment.

“As a result, William has been taking on more responsibilities, and he and Kate have been preparing for their future roles sooner than they would have expected.”

A source added to the publication: “There’s a sense of calm before the storm. They are next in line for the biggest job of their lives, and of course, Kate’s health has taken priority, but it’s also allowed everyone to take a step back and figure out what’s important right now.”

Princess of Wales ‘slowly’ returning to royal duties

Since completing her cancer treatment, Kate has slowly made a return to royal duties. In early December, she joined Prince William to welcome the Emir of Qatar and his wife to the UK for his state visit.

Then on December 6, Kate, William and their three children attended her annual Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey.

In a statement in September, the princess announced the end of her cancer treatment. She said she was “looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can”.

However, Kate said her path to healing and full recovery is long and she will continue to “take each day as it comes”.

She also revealed the impact the health ordeal had on her and William. Kate said: “This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved.”
