Meghan Markle announced the death of her beloved rescue dog, Guy, recently and it was met with an outpouring of condolences from fans and followers.

However, the tribute shared by the Duchess of Sussex also sparked controversy.

Some accused her of leveraging the emotional moment to promote her upcoming Netflix cookery show, With Love, Meghan.

Meghan Markle shares tribute to beloved dog Guy

On Tuesday, Meghan shared a poignant video montage on Instagram celebrating Guy’s life, accompanied by a heartfelt message.

In her tribute, the duchess admitted to shedding “too many tears to count” over the loss of her beloved companion.

Meghan adopted Guy in 2015 after he was rescued from the woods in Kentucky.

“Because many of you will now see Guy in this new series, I hope you’ll come to understand why I am so devastated by his loss,” she wrote. “I think you may fall a little bit in love too.”

While many sympathised with Meghan’s grief, others, including royal commentators, questioned the timing and tone of the message.

I thought it was quite noteworthy that she used it as a plug for the show.

On Mail+’s Palace Confidential, the Daily Mail’s Royal Editor, Rebecca English, expressed discomfort.

She commented: “I thought it was quite noteworthy that she used it as a plug for the show, which, I’ll be honest, made me feel personally a little bit uncomfortable. I am just not sure if that was a wise thing to do.”

Rebecca contrasted Meghan’s approach to how Prince William and Princess Kate announced the death of their dog Lupo in 2020.

“It is with a heavy heart we announce we have lost Lupo who was a big part of our family,” their statement read – short, simple, and devoid of self-promotion.

Richard Eden, the Mail’s Diary Editor, pointed out the potential awkwardness of Guy’s presence in the cookery show.

“If the programme starts next week and the dog features in the programme but he is actually dead… She felt she had to tell people before about what had happened,” he suggested.

However, royal commentator Rebecca suggested an alternative approach. “Maybe,” she said. “Or you could add at the end of the show, ‘In loving memory of Guy,’ as you often see things like that.”

With Love, Meghan is set to premiere on January 15 and will mark Meghan’s return to the media spotlight.

The show will explore her love for cooking and feature recipes inspired by her life experiences.

On Instagram recently, Meghan said of the new series: “I have been so excited to share this with you! I hope you love the show as much as I loved making it. Wishing you all a fantastic new year!

“Thanks to our amazing crew and the team @netflix. Beyond grateful for the support – and fun!

“As ever, Meghan.”
