Prince George title he could inherit before he's king - unless Prince William avoids tradition
Charles was the longest running Prince of WalesPrince George is expected to inherit an iconic title before he’s made king – unless Prince William avoids tradition, that is.
William, 42, inherited the title from his father, King Charles, following the late queen’s death in 2022.

Prince George to inherit Prince of Wales title
Like his father, and his grandfather before him, Prince George is expected to inherit the Prince of Wales title before he’s made king.
The heir apparent to the throne taking on the title is a tradition that stretches back to the 14th century.
The first heir apparent to take on the title was Edward of Caernarfon in 1301. His father, Edward I, bestowed the title upon him following his conquest of Wales.
Since then, the heir apparent has been given the title of Prince of Wales by the ruling monarch.
The tradition briefly paused after 1936, when Edward VIII became king. However, he didn’t hand the title on because he had no children.
In 1958, Charles was given the title by the late queen when he was just nine years old. 11 years later, aged 20, the investiture of Charles as Prince of Wales took place at Caernarfon Castle. An estimated 500 million people watched the ceremony take place.
When he married Princess Diana, she became Princess of Wales – the first since 1910, when Mary of Teck became queen consort.

Prince George to inherit iconic Prince of Wales title
In 2022, just hours after the death of the late queen, the king bestowed Prince William with the title of Prince of Wales.
His wife, Kate Middleton, also became Princess of Wales.
And it’s now expected that when William ascends to the throne, he’ll pass on the iconic title to his eldest son, Prince George.
The monarchy is built on tradition.
Speaking on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show, royal expert Huw Thomas admitted he’d be “stunned” if George didn’t inherit the title when he becomes heir apparent.
“I’d be stunned if it disappeared, only because the monarchy is built on tradition,” he said.

Royal family stick to tradition with titles
Huw then continued.
“It may not be an inherited title, but it is the tradition that the monarch gives their son the title Prince of Wales. So it would be quite stunning if they didn’t. History tells us they stick to tradition,” he then said.
“Charles barely waited 24 hours before passing it on to William. And you would be surprised that if in future William thought, ‘now I’m going to kind of ditch this one,'” he then went on to say.
However, the expert then speculated that William may feel the challenge to “show he isn’t his dad” and that he won’t just copy what he did.
He then went on to say that he thinks Charles did a “really good” job at being Prince of Wales.
He added that the king didn’t put a foot wrong when it came to Wales during his time in the role.
