Inside the royal family's diet - from King Charles’ ‘disdain’ over William’s food choices to product that’s ‘out of bounds’
Have you ever wondered what the royals' dinner looks like? The royal family is known for having a team of chefs to prepare their meals – but what exactly does the monarchy’s diet look like?
Well, a former royal chef has spoken out in a new interview and shared some details on what the royal family enjoys at breakfast, lunch and teatime.
From King Charles, 76, not approving of son Prince William’s food choices as a young man to the product which is “out of bounds”, here’s a look inside what the royal family eats…

What do members of the royal family eat?
Mervyn Wycherley, who worked at the palace for 33 years, has shared a few details on what the royals eat.
Speaking on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show, Mervyn said: “The food is quite simplistic. They love simple foods, but always very good quality foods, very organic. It’s always been the same, all of the family have an interest in food, especially His Royal Highness, the king now, he’s very, very interested in his food, and enjoys putting his oar in and with menus and all sorts of things.
“If dinner was done in Highgrove [Charles’ country home] and it was just them on their own, they would just have card tables in the drawing room and have a very simple dinner. It’s just first course, main course, dessert.”

The royals get a ‘menu book’ for their meals
Elsewhere, Mervyn explained that there’s a “menu book” that “goes up every week or every few days to be cleared”.
He said it gives an option of “first courses, main courses and desserts”. Mervyn said foods such as “venison, salmon and pheasants come in from Sandringham”.
They love simple foods, but always very good quality foods, very organic.
Former royal protection officer Ken Wharfe also recalled a moment when Charles was “very peculiar” about the food he wanted.
He said as William became older, he was “very keen to go to burger bars and pizza places”. However, that “didn’t sit comfortably” with Charles and he would have a look of “disdain” on his face.
Foods the royal family can’t eat in their diet
There’s many reports claiming different foods the royal family can’t eat. Mervyn shared that foie gras – a French cuisine made of the liver of a duck or goose – was “out of bounds”.
Meanwhile, Queen Camilla once revealed that too much garlic isn’t allowed in meals.
Royals are apparently banned from eating shellfish due to fears of food poisoning. Former royal butler Grant Harold told Woman & Home magazine in 2021: “It is a very sensible move to abandon having seafood when out and about on public duties. We don’t want a member of the royal family having a serious reaction to food poisoning, especially if she is on an overseas tour.”
However, King Charles seemingly went against this in 2013 when he was seen eating oysters during an engagement.

King Charles is a big fan of ‘cheesy baked eggs’ in his diet
Of course, it’s known exactly what the royals eat every single day. However, there’s reports on some meals and foods they enjoy tucking into.
King Charles apparently loves “cheesy baked eggs” for brunch. According to reports, the king isn’t the biggest fan of eating lunch. The reason? Because he wants to focus on his work in the day!
The monarch is also said to be a fan of a plant-based diet, telling the BBC in 2021: “For years I haven’t eaten meat and fish on two days a week and I don’t eat dairy products on one day a week.”
Queen Camilla, meanwhile, is apparently a big fan of scrambled eggs for breakfast, according to her son. Camilla has previously said she tries to eat healthily, adding avocados, fish and almonds to her diet. However, Camilla has also insisted some diet trends are “ridiculous” like “cutting out dairy and all the things that are good for your bones”.
In addition, former royal chef Carolyn Robb previously told Racked of Charles and Camilla: “They were always very thrifty and economical. If we made roasted lamb and there were leftovers, we’d probably go and make shepherd’s pie the next night.”

Princess Kate Middleton diet
Kate, Princess of Wales, is reportedly a fan of healthy green smoothies, meat-free dishes at lunch and roast chicken. Kate herself previously said she’s also a fan of spicy dishes.
According to reports, Kate’s favourite dessert is sticky toffee pudding. Kate is also known for baking her own birthday cakes for her three children.
Kae is also said to be a fan of snacking on superfood goji berries. Goji berries contain antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, and amino acids. They are said to be beneficial for anti-ageing. Is that the secret to her glowing complexion?!
Prince William has delved into his favourite foods on a few occasions. In 2022, he told a group of children during an engagement: “I do a good breakfast, sausage, bacon and eggs.”
He also apparently loves his wife Kate’s roast chicken recipe. Royal author Katie Nicholl told Vanity Fair: “In the evenings she indulges her hobby of cooking William’s favourite supper, roast chicken.”
The couple also love sushi, with William previously spilling the detail during a royal engagement.
