King Charles delighted royal fans with a stunning new portrait shared in celebration of Burns Night.
The photograph was taken by Millie Pilkington last autumn and showcases the monarch standing in the elegant library of Balmoral Castle.
The image – which you can see here – was released on the royal family’s social media accounts at the weekend to coincide with the occasion.
A body language expert has also weighed in on the image, saying Charles looks like a “different man”.

King Charles portrait for Burns Night
Burns Night is a time to mark Scottish traditions and celebrate the renowned poet Robert Burns.
The royal family’s post of Charles was captioned: “Wishing those celebrating a very happy #BurnsNight tonight. The king in the Library at Balmoral Castle, taken by Millie Pilkington.”
In the photo, the 76-year-old monarch exudes regal charm, dressed in a kilt crafted from the King Charles III tartan.
Designed by the Scottish Tartans Authority in 2023 to mark his coronation, the tartan also celebrates Charles’ commitment to preserving the traditions of Highland dress.
Beautiful picture of His Majesty! And indeed, he looks very good in tartan.
He paired the kilt with a beige tweed blazer, matching waistcoat, and a striped tie.
Royal fans were quick to praise the portrait, with many taking to the comments section to share their admiration for his outfit.
“Happy Burns Night! What an incredible photograph of the king!” One commenter wrote.
“Beautiful picture of His Majesty! And indeed, he looks very good in tartan,” another agreed.
“I love the colour coordination between the books, tie, and tartan,” a third fan gushed.
“Happy Burns Night Your Majesty. Beautiful kilt,” another chimed in.
Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of Betfair Slots, body language expert Darren Stanton said: “Charles looks like a completely different man. In this portrait, we can see his confidence levels have come on leaps and bounds.
“Charles is looking like a fantastic version of himself. In terms of facial expression and overall levels of confidence and energy, they’re brilliant.”

The royal family’s special connection to Scotland
The setting of the photograph, Balmoral Castle, holds a special place in the royal family’s heart.
Nestled in the Scottish Highlands, the estate has long been a beloved retreat, particularly for the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The queen’s granddaughter, Princess Eugenie, once described Balmoral as the place where the family feels most at home.
“I think Granny is the most happy there,” she said. “Walks, picnics, dogs – a lot of dogs! And people coming in and out all the time. Family-wise we’re all there, so it’s a lovely base for Granny and Grandpa to be.”
For King Charles, Balmoral is equally significant. The estate is home to his private residence, Birkhall, where he proposed to Queen Camilla.
Speaking to Country Life, Charles once called the garden at Birkhall “a special place,” noting its sentimental value as it was designed by his grandmother, the Queen Mother.
Charles’ choice to wear the King Charles III tartan reflects his strong ties to Scotland and its culture.
Earlier this week, the king donned another kilt during a visit to The Gordon Highlanders Museum in Aberdeen.
This deep appreciation for Scottish heritage is something the king has consistently demonstrated.
By honouring traditions like Burns Night and proudly embracing his role as a patron of Scottish arts and history, Charles continues to strengthen his bond with the people of Scotland.
