Princess Beatrice and husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi have welcomed their second child, and her name may contain a hidden tribute to her father, Prince Andrew.

Buckingham Palace announced Athena’s arrival this week. They revealed that she was born on January 22 at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, weighing just 4lb 5oz.

“Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi,” the official palace statement read.

Athena joins her older sister Sienna Elizabeth, three, and Edoardo’s son, Wolfie, eight, from a previous relationship.

Princess Beatrice names baby daughter Athena with a nod to Prince Andrew

While the name Athena is of Greek origin, this may not be the only meaning.

It may have been deliberately chosen as a subtle tribute to Prince Andrew, as Princess Beatrice and Edoardo seem to follow a pattern.

For their first daughter, Sienna Elizabeth, they selected an “S” name to pay tribute to Beatrice’s mother, Sarah Ferguson.

At the time, a royal source told HELLO!: “They were looking for an Italian name which started with an S for Sarah, to honour the duchess [Sarah Ferguson], and also reflected the golden rust colour of both the duchess’s hair colour and Beatrice’s, which the new baby shares.”

Following this tradition, Athena’s name starting with “A” may be a quiet nod to Beatrice’s father, Prince Andrew.

Meanwhile, Athena’s middle name, Elizabeth, is a clear tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II. This follows in the footsteps of her sister, Sienna.

Meanwhile, the meaning behind her third name, Rose, remains unknown.

Since stepping back from royal duties in 2019 following public backlash over his connections to late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Prince Andrew has remained largely out of the spotlight.

His low profile continued after further controversy in December 2024. Reports linked him to a Chinese businessman, reportedly expelled from the UK on national security grounds.

Beatrice and new baby Athena are ‘doing well’

Despite Athena’s early arrival, Buckingham Palace assured the public that mother and baby are doing well.

“Her Royal Highness and her daughter are healthy and doing well, and the family are enjoying spending time together with Athena’s older siblings, Wolfie and Sienna,” they announced.

We welcomed baby Athena into our lives last week. She is tiny and absolutely perfect.

Princess Eugenie celebrated her niece’s arrival with a glittery graphic on Instagram, while proud dad Edoardo, 41, shared his own heartfelt post.

“Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi. We welcomed baby Athena into our lives last week. She is tiny and absolutely perfect,” he gushed. “We are all (including Wolfie and Sienna) already completely besotted with her. Our hearts are overflowing with love for you, baby Athena.”

Edoardo also took the opportunity to thank the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital staff for their exceptional care.
