Recently, Anne rejected the idea of retiring from her role as a working royal.

Speaking to the Press Association recently, the princess said that retiring wasn’t an option.

Now, it’s been reported that King Charles was overjoyed to hear Anne’s comments – so much so that he grew emotional when he spoke to her about them recently.

Speaking to Woman’s Day magazine, a source said: “In private, he is simply overjoyed that she’ll be there with him until the end.”

The source then continued.

“The conversation they had about that was unusually emotional for Charles and he did break down in tears over her lifelong loyalty to him,” they claimed.

However, according to the insider, Princess Anne responded in her characteristic manner, telling her brother to “dry your tears, buck up and get on with the job”.

In private, he is simply overjoyed that she’ll be there with him until the end.

The source then continued, saying that Anne is Charles’ most “reliable confidante”.

“She’s more than just a sister to him, she’s someone he’s always been able to lean on and frankly, he simply can’t rule without her by his side,” the source said. The source then added that Anne aims to work “right up to her death,” just like her mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

King Charles and Princess Anne’s bond

Anne and the king share a strong bond and have done so throughout their lives.

Their close relationship was perhaps most evident during the late queen’s funeral procession back in 2022. Anne and Charles walked together, in front of their brothers, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

At the king’s coronation in 2023, the Princess Royal took on the role of Gold-Stick-in-Waiting. This role is historically given to someone entrusted with the safety of the monarch.

Anne also acted as Charles’ personal aide-de-camp, travelling on horseback behind him and Camilla.

After becoming king, Charles appointed Anne (as well as Edward) counsellors of state. This means that they can perform constitutional duties on behalf of their brother.

After Prince Philip’s death in 2021, Anne and Charles bond seemingly grew “stronger,” according to a body language expert.

“Their deeper bonds as siblings are probably about to become even stronger now they have lost their father,” Judi James told the Express in 2021.
