Donald Trump and Prince William met at the end of last year when the US President had nothing but gushing words to say about the royal.

Now, a new report is claiming that the Prince of Wales, 42, could become Britain’s “Trump card” to keep a special relationship between the UK and the US.

Donald Trump, 78, was inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States in January. So, how will the royals play a part in building good relations between the UK Government and Trump?

Prince William could be Britain’s ‘Trump card’ after his meeting with Donald Trump

At the end of January, a meeting took place between Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. It’s said they spent around 45 minutes on the phone.

Starmer also met with Prince William at the end of January for a private meeting. It’s tradition for the heir to the throne to have an annual meeting with the British PM.

We know that royal sources and his aides want to push William into this global statesman figure.

Now, royal commentators believe William could be the key to keep relations good across the pond.

GB News royal correspondent Cameron Walker told The Sun‘s Royal Exclusive show: “The meeting took place at Kensington Palace and I understand it’s protocol that once a year the Prime Minister would be meeting Prince William. But I think it was telling that it was as soon after the PM had a phone call with the new President Trump.

Prince of Wales could be ‘global statesman figure’

“We know that royal sources and his aides want to push William into this global statesman figure and we know the Labour government isn’t going to get on much with President Trump and the Republican party in the US.

“So, is the royal family going to be the British government’s Trump card, pardon the pun, to get the trade tariffs off the table and create a better relationship with the US.”

The commentator added that Starmer “can only dream of the approval rating Prince William has at the moment”.

According to the latest YouGov poll, William has a high popularity rating with the public.

Trump told the New York Post of the meeting: “He looked really, very handsome last night. Some people look better in person. He looked great. He looked really nice, and I told him that.

“We had a great talk for half an hour, a little more than half an hour. We had a great, great talk.”
