Sarah Ferguson has previously opened up about what ex-husband Prince Andrew is like as a grandfather.

Sarah and Andrew split in the 1990s but continue to live together at Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park. They have two daughters together – Princess Beatrice, 36, and Princess Eugenie, 34.

Last week, Princess Beatrice announced the birth of her second daughter with her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. The couple welcomed baby Athena Elizabeth Rose on January 22.

Sarah, 65, and Andrew, 64, now have another grandchild to dote on, so what are they like as grandparents?

The Duchess of York recently gushed over the arrival of baby Athena. She said on Instagram: “Overflowing with love and joy to be able to welcome Athena Elizabeth Rose into the world.

“She is already so adored and I’m incredibly blessed to be a Granny once again. So proud of Edo, Beatrice and the rest of my little 5-a-side team!”

It’s a joy to see him really shine as a grandfather.

Sarah and Andrew have four grandchildren – Princess Beatrice‘s two daughters Sienna, three, and Athena, and Eugenie’s two sons, August, three, and Ernest, one, with her husband Jack Brooksbank.

Sarah previously opened up about how her ex Andrew is with their grandkids, calling him a “very good” grandfather.

Prince Andrew is a ‘very good grandfather’

Speaking to OK! Magazine in 2022, Sarah gushed: “[Andrew] is a wonderful father and a very very good grandfather.”

Before that in 2021, the duchess had nothing but gushing words for her ex. Appearing on ITV daytime show Lorraine, Fergie said: “The pandemic has been extraordinary for everybody, it’s been so challenging. But I think Prince Andrew is such a good man, he’s a thoroughly good man, he’s a very gentle man, he’s a really good father.

“We did co-parent very well, hence the reason why the girls are very solid and [have their] feet on the ground. But now, as a grandfather, he’s really good.”

Sarah went on to say: “He can go for hours talking about football and all those sorts of things. And I’m like, ‘Ok, off you go.'”

Sarah Ferguson said ‘it’s a joy’ to see Prince Andrew as a grandfather

The duchess added: “It’s a joy to see him really shine as a grandfather. I think it’s very important, family unity – communicate, compromise, compassion.

“Those are the three Cs that are essential… Life is about yourself and being able to have team spirit. Say what you feel – communicate, compromise and then compassion, let’s go forward.”

Prince Andrew has faced much scandal in the last few years, leading him to step down from his duties in late 2019.

Then in 2022, Andrew was stripped of his military titles and royal patronages amid his sexual assault civil case. He eventually settled out of court with his accuser Virginia Giuffre. Andrew has always denied allegations of sexual assault.

The Duke of York now lives a rather quiet life at Royal Lodge, where royal experts claim he’s become a bit of a “recluse”.
