As Meghan Markle’s ex-husband Trevor Engelson welcomes a baby, inside their divorce - from her cold move to ‘abrupt’ split
They were together for seven years before they got married in 2011Before Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was married to Trevor Engelson – and now as her ex-husband welcomes a baby, we’re taking a look at their divorce.
The Duchess of Sussex, 43, married the American film producer, 48, in 2011, during a ceremony in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, after seven years of dating.
However, things did not go smoothly for them as they reportedly were struggling to make long distance work. In 2013, just over two years since tying the knot, they ended their marriage. Despite it initially seeming like a peaceful and friendly divorce, reports suggest otherwise.
So exactly what went down between Meghan Markle and her ex-husband? Let’s have a look.

Meghan’s relationship with Trevor Engelson
When the pair filed for divorce, they cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason. Reports suggest this was due to the distance between the pair.
Actress Meghan was working on the TV show Suits in Toronto, Canada, while Trevor was based in California. So, it seems the marriage struggled as they were a five-hour plane journey from each other.
However, Meghan was still filming Suits when she initially met Prince Harry and he was still based in the UK at that point. So, it seems long distance wasn’t too much of a block in their relationship.
Meghan Markle ‘sent rings back’ to ex-husband amid divorce
A 2018 royal book appeared to share some details on the pair’s split.
Royal biographer Andrew Morton published his book Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, detailing what allegedly happened between her and Trevor.
He penned that Meghan sent her diamond engagement and wedding ring back to her ex-husband in the mail. And it was this move that apparently caused Trevor to “barely contain his anger”.
Morton wrote: “A wealthy entrepreneur friend claimed the marriage ended so abruptly that Meghan sent Trevor her diamond wedding and engagement rings back by registered mail.”
The way she handled it, Trevor definitely had the rug pulled out from under him.
Morton also wrote that a friend of Trevor’s said he went from admiring his relationship with Meghan to feeling like “a piece of something stuck to the bottom of her shoe”.
The split also caused her former best friend and first maid of honour, Ninaki Priddy, to no longer want any association with Meghan.
Ninaki previously told the Daily Mail: “I don’t believe she gave him enough of an opportunity. I think there was an element of ‘out of sight, out of mind’ for Meghan.
“The way she handled it, Trevor definitely had the rug pulled out from under him. He was hurt. What came to light after Trevor and I spoke ended my friendship with Meghan.”

Meghan’s split from Trevor was ‘totally out of the blue’
Despite seemingly struggling with the long distance, it appears Trevor had no idea his marriage was on the verge of breakdown. Meghan got her role on Suits just months before the pair got hitched, and it seems this was the beginning of the end.
Morton penned in his 2018 book: “Whether she wanted to admit it or not, Meghan, who once said she couldn’t imagine a life without Trevor by her side, was now building a new world for herself.
“As Toronto was becoming more her home than L.A, the dynamics in their relationship subtly altered. She was her own woman now, earning a steady income. No longer dependent on her husband’s connections.”
He claimed that the breakup was “totally out of the blue” for Trevor.

Meghan Markle ‘took her power back’ after first divorce
After the divorce, Meghan’s friend Abby Wathen who was also going through the same thing, explained Meghan “took her power back”. Speaking in the ITV’s 2017 documentary Prince Harry and Meghan: Truly, Madly, Deeply, Abby said “it wasn’t the right relationship for her, so she moved on”.
But it seems the years haven’t helped Trevor get by what happened with Meghan, as Morton’s book claimed he still doesn’t want anything to do with her.
He wrote that Trevor’s attitude changes to “a cold fury” whenever her name so much is mentioned in a conversation.
Despite this, Trevor has just welcomed his third baby with his wife, Tracey Kurland. They married in 2019. Their new son, Logan Stanford Engelson, joins his two older sisters – Ford Grace and Sienna Lee.
Meghan and Harry moved to the US in 2020, and have two children of their own – Archie, five, and Lilibet, three. Although they try to keep them out of the limelight, a recent image of their children has been leaked.
