Prince William can get “irritated” easily, according to a new royal book that delves into the private dynamics of him and wife Princess Kate.

Excerpts from Tom Quinn’s new 2025 book, Yes, Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants, were recently published by The Times.

In the book, Quinn claims that both King Charles and Prince William are highly particular and prone to frustration when things don’t go their way.

Prince William and King Charles are ‘prone to tantrums,’ book claims

According to a former palace staffer, both King Charles, 76, and Prince William, 42 have a tendency to get irritated easily.

The royals have a preference for things being done in a very specific manner, it’s claimed.

Quinn wrote: “Protocol means suits must be pressed and laid out after a period of consultation the night before; shoes must be polished, ties chosen. Baths must be run at precisely the same time each day and both King Charles and the Prince of Wales, Prince William, are prone to tantrums if things are not done to their liking.”

Meanwhile, a former staffer reportedly said: “They both get irritated very quickly. They are very picky. It comes naturally to them.”

How Kate ‘calms William when he gets fractious’

The Prince of Wales reportedly has a strong perfectionist streak. However, those who work with him allegedly say that his wife Princess Kate, 43, is instrumental in keeping him grounded.

“I don’t know where William would be without Kate,” the source apparently continued. “She hasn’t had everything done for her throughout her life, so she calms him down when he gets a bit fractious.”

The insider even suggested that the Princess of Wales jokes about having to treat William like an extra child.

“She said he sometimes has to be treated as her fourth child,” they reportedly added.

Meghan Markle thought royals ‘behaved like babies’

The book also includes claims about Meghan Markle. Apparently, Meghan thought some of the royals “behaved like babies”.

This perspective allegedly contributed to Meghan’s struggles to adjust to royal life. The Californian-native found their strict adherence to protocol and deep-rooted competitiveness difficult to navigate.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry was also described as having a short fuse. Despite this, he was generally considered one of the “easiest” royals to work for.

One former servant recalled an incident where Harry became annoyed when some of his papers were misplaced in his private study.

They also allegedly said that there was a running joke behind palace walls that compared Harry to Prince Regent from the British TV show Blackadder.

Prince William ‘flinched’ at Meghan Markle’s hugs

Elsewhere in the book, Quinn claimed how Meghan’s preference for hugging caused clashes within the royal family.

“Tension developed between William and Harry as a result of Meghan’s warm, friendly, hug-everyone approach.” he wrote. “Kate, William, and Charles tended to flinch when she moved in for a hug.”

Meghan was “understandably hurt” by this reaction.

Royal Insider has contacted reps for Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace and Meghan and Harry on the book’s claims.
