A nostalgic look at Prince William's iconic hair looks from bowl cuts to baldness
William has experimented with different hairstyles over the years
Prince William has certainly had a hair journey and it’s one for the history books, evolving from bowl cuts to curly locks, a sharp buzz cut, thinning hair and now, a rugged beard.
As the Prince of Wales, 42, embraces his best look yet, let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit some of his most iconic hair moments over the years.

Prince William’s classic bowl cut hair as a child
In 1990, Prince William sported the classic bowl cut as a child. He was seen with the cut during the Trooping the Colour ceremony at the time.
His once ice-blonde baby locks had darkened to a warmer blonde, giving him an adorable, yet unmistakably ’90s look.

Prince of Wales’ hair as a teenager
As William approached his late teens, he ditched the bowl cut in favour of a shorter, cleaner look.
The blonde tips were trimmed away, revealing a more natural dark blonde hue as he posed for photos at his Highgrove home.

University days
In his late teens, Prince William arrived at St. Andrews University, where he would later meet the love of his life, Princess Kate.
In an iconic photo from 2001, his fluffy and thick blonde locks and boyish good looks made him a heartthrob among students.

William with shorter hair in 2006
By 2006, William had fully embraced a short-haired look. As seen above, William had seemed to cut some length off his locks.

Prince William with a beard
Christmas 2008 gave royal fans a surprise gift when Prince William debuted his first-ever beard after a stint in the military.
With medium-length locks and a rugged beard, the future king looked noticeably different.

Prince William let his thinning hair remain natural
With his hair beginning to thin, William opted for a natural look – he didn’t do anything!
This was the same year he and Kate debuted baby son Prince George – who is now 11 – to the world outside St. Mary’s Hospital in July 2013.

William’s ‘thinning’ hairline
By 2016, William’s hair had noticeably thinned. At royal engagements, his receding hairline became more visible.
William started embracing a much shorter cut to work with his changing look.

Prince William’s ‘£180’ buzz cut
In January 2018, Prince William shocked royal fans when he completely shaved his head. The Prince of Wales unveiled a No. 1 buzz cut during a visit to a London children’s hospital.
The look was reportedly done at a Mayfair clinic for £180, and was a bold departure from his previous styles.

Prince William’s beard now
Fast forward to 2024, and Prince William has officially hit his style peak. When William debuted his new bearded look via a social media video in August, fans went wild over the rugged, sophisticated transformation.
He’s rockin’ the beard!
His sharp facial hair, combined with his signature tailored suits, has completely revitalised his appearance.
“He’s rockin’ the beard!” One fan commented.
“Our very handsome prince!” Another gushed.
“Love the beard!” A third fan added.
With the internet’s approval, it looks like William’s bearded era is here to stay – and we’re not complaining.
