'Reasons' behind Prince William and Princess Kate's move to Windsor before his 'hardest year yet'
The family moved to Adelaide Cottage in 2022Prince William and wife Princess Kate made a move from Kensington Palace in London to Windsor in 2022 and many reports have speculated on the reasons why.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, 43, moved to Adelaide Cottage, a four-bedroom home in Windsor Home Park just east of Windsor Castle.
But why did they make the move? Reports have suggested a few reasons behind the family’s decision.

Reasons why Prince William and Kate moved to Windsor
One reason which was reported to be behind the couple’s decision to move to Windsor was for Prince William‘s grandmother Queen Elizabeth II – who died just months after William and Kate’s move.
It was said they wanted to be closer to the queen, who was living at Windsor Castle at the time.
Meanwhile, other reasons include William, 42, and Kate wanting their three children – Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six, – to have more normalcy.
Late last year, a royal commentator discussed the couple’s decision. Duncan Larcombe told OK! Magazine: “I think they surprised a lot of people when they moved there.
“There are plenty of other places they could have moved to, but Adelaide Cottage fits with their desire as parents to be a normal family, where there aren’t servants and they don’t have 30 rooms.”
He added: “William would much rather have his kids around him, in the rooms next door to where he’s sleeping.”
Duncan also said the cottage’s “proximity to the school” the children attended (Lambrook School) and the “proximity to Kate’s parents makes it absolutely ideal”.

William and Kate’s home Adelaide Cottage ‘ticks all the right boxes’
Meanwhile, royal author Katie Nicholl told the publication that the family can “come and go in complete privacy”.
She said this makes the “downsize” from Kensington Palace “worth it on every level”. She said Adelaide Cottage “ticks all the right boxes” for the family.
Adelaide Cottage fits with their desire as parents to be a normal family.
The home move providing more privacy for the couple was ideal in 2024 as Kate underwent treatment for cancer.
William admitted facing a “brutal” year after both his wife and his father King Charles battled cancer.
While the king is still receiving treatment, Kate announced in January 2025 that she’s in remission.

Prince William on his ‘hardest year’ yet
Speaking to reporters during his visit to South Africa in November 2024, Prince William admitted of the past year: “It’s been dreadful. It’s probably been the hardest year in my life. So, trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult.”
