Losing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was a “great shame” for the royal family, a TV legend has claimed.

The star – who has been a regular fixture on screens since the 1970s – also argued that Meghan was “never stood a chance”.

Sir Trevor McDonald insists it’s a ‘great shame’ Harry and Meghan are no longer part of royal family

During a new column for SAGA magazine, iconic newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald spoke about Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43. He discussed the impact they could have had within the royal family.

This year marks five years since Harry and Meghan moved to the US. This is something Sir Trevor, 85, initially believed would be temporary.

It is a great shame Prince Harry is no longer part of the working monarchy.

“To my mind, it is a great shame Prince Harry is no longer part of the working monarchy. And not only because his presence would give them strength in numbers. The past year has exposed just how ‘slimmed down’ the monarchy has become, with both the king and the Princess of Wales taking time out for cancer treatment. I have always felt Harry brought something special to the role,” he wrote.

Sir Trevor then continued, saying that he has noticed similarities between Harry and his late mother, Princess Diana. An example he gave is that they both speak from the heart during speeches.

He then wrote that it’s also sad that Meghan was never given a chance to prove herself with a role in the monarchy.

“Meghan, too, could have brought a new dimension to the monarchy. By having a different background, perhaps she could have changed how the royal family is perceived by those who had never before felt a strong connection,” he wrote. “Yet it seems to me that precisely because of those differences, she never stood a chance of being accepted.”

Sir Trevor doesn’t hold high hopes for the Sussexes to return to the royal fold anytime soon.

“From where we are today, it looks almost impossible that someone could persuade Harry and his family to come back to Britain. But I sincerely hope it can be done one day. We cannot afford to lose someone so young, so full of energy and so imbued with the charitable instincts that are at the core of our royal family,” he wrote.

Mindy Kaling gushes over Meghan Markle

Sir Trevor isn’t the only celebrity to sing the Sussexes praises recently.

Comedian and actress Mindy Kaling, who appears on Meghan’s new Netflix show With Love, Meghan, was full of praise for the Duchess of Sussex.

Speaking in TIME magazine, she branded Meghan a “very generous woman”.

“I was on maternity leave with my daughter in March and April. And Meghan texted me that she was doing a show where she was going to cook for her friends,” she explained.

Mindy admitted the reason she agreed to it was because she “wanted to get taken care of” while on leave. And so she was immediately up for a “fun maternity leave field trip”.

She added that Meghan “knew I needed a break”.
