Meghan and Serena have been friends for over a decade
Tennis legend Serena Williams has come under fire after publicly supporting Meghan Markle and her new Netflix series, With Love, Meghan.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion took to Instagram to encourage her followers to watch the Duchess of Sussex’s lifestyle show, which premiered on March 4.
However, the post was met with mixed reactions from fans.

After the premiere of With Love, Meghan, Serena, 43, posted a heartfelt message to her Instagram followers, praising the series.
“I’m so excited for you to check out WITH LOVE, MEGHAN now streaming exclusively on Netflix!” She gushed.
“Join my wonderful friend @meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, as she opens up her world and shares her personal tips for the kitchen, garden, and so much more. It’s a fun and inspiring series that reminds us all how easy it is to bring a little beauty into our everyday lives, even when we least expect it. Can’t wait for you to experience it!”
Serena and Meghan’s friendship dates back many years. The pair first met at the Super Bowl in 2010 before reconnecting years later.
Meghan, 43, previously gushed about Serena in a post on her now-defunct blog, The Tig.
“When Serena Williams barrelled in my direction this past February at an event, nails done, hair done, everything did, I’ll be honest and say I looked behind me to see who she was running to. It was Serena Williams, after all.” she wrote.
“Serena – number-one-tennis-player-in-the-world – Williams. Turns out this fancy lady was coming to me.”
Since then, the two have maintained a close bond, with Serena publicly supporting Meghan through her transition into royal life and later exit from the monarchy.
Serena was also one of the famous guests at Meghan and Prince Harry’s 2018 royal wedding.

Despite their longstanding friendship, Serena’s public promotion of With Love, Meghan sparked backlash. Some fans criticised her for supporting the duchess.
“Sorry, I couldn’t get through one episode. It is dreadfully boring and weird,” one critic commented.
“No one cares about Meghan,” another echoed.
A disappointed fan wrote: “Love you @serenawilliams but don’t understand your support of this woman who doesn’t have an ounce of the integrity that you do.”
“Really disappointed by this post, Serena,” another agreed.
It’s a fun and inspiring series that reminds us all how easy it is to bring a little beauty into our everyday lives.
However, not everyone was against Serena’s show of support. Many Meghan fans flooded the comments with love, praising both the duchess and the Netflix series.
One enthusiastic supporter wrote: “I’ll be watching. It’s great to see you all support each other. We need more of this every day.”

Earlier this week, Meghan posted a sweet Instagram video of Serena playing with her three-year-old daughter, Lilibet, ahead of the Netflix show’s release.
“When the aunties come to play and celebrate! Love you @serenawilliams,” Meghan captioned the clip.
