Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie 'truly indispensable' to the royal family as duke celebrates 61st birthday
March 10 marks the Duke of Edinburgh's 61st birthdayPrince Edward and Duchess Sophie have been described as “truly indispensable” to the royal family as the duke marks his 61st birthday today.
The couple have stepped up with their royal duties even more following Queen Elizabeth II’s death in 2022. Now two of the most valued members of the royal family, it’s said they’ll play a big role in the monarchy’s future.
According to a royal expert, Prince Edward and Sophie will likely play an “important” role when Prince William becomes king.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams has told Royal Insider that Edward and Sophie are “low key” but also “hard working”.
He said: “The couple are truly indispensable to the royal family, carrying out numerous royal engagements and having numerous patronages.
“Edward has links to over 70 charities. He and Sophie are relatively low key, but also hard working. They are certain to play an important role in the royal family in the future, when Prince William is king.”
Richard said that Edward and Sophie, 60, are an “important and trusted part of the royal family and their support, especially in the recent difficult months, has been much appreciated”.
Prince Edward to enjoy ‘delayed celebration’ for his birthday
Going on to discuss Edward’s birthday on March 10, Richard said the celebrations may be on hold.
He explained to us: “The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will probably have a delayed celebration.
The couple are truly indispensable to the royal family.
“Sophie will be travelling to New York. Neither will be joining the rest of the royal family at the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey.”
Gushing over the royal couple, Richard added: “They are two of the only four working royals under 70. Although of very different temperament to his father, the late Duke of Edinburgh, he has taken over several of his patronages including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, which has an amazing worldwide reach.”
Royal family messages to Edward on his birthday
On Monday, the royal family’s social media pages celebrated Prince Edward’s birthday. A message read: “Happy birthday to the Duke of Edinburgh!”
Royal fans also marked the occasion as one person gushed: “He is the most wonderful! Happy birthday!”
