What Meghan Markle was really like at college in words of former classmates
Meghan divided students it seems...
Since her college days, Meghan Markle’s life has changed dramatically. The former actress was once a leading part in TV sensation Suits, with a successful acting career under her belt and is now a wife to Prince Harry, mother of two and Netflix star.
But how do her former classmates remember her after studying at Northwestern? Here is everything we know…

What was Meghan Markle like at college?
Actress Meghan Markle graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 2003, with a focus on theatre and international studies.
Previously dubbing herself a “theatre nerd,” Meghan originally went into politics because, as she told Marie Claire: “I hated this idea of being this cliché—a girl from L.A. who decides to be an actress.”
Meghan’s professors reportedly spoke highly of her work in the classroom as well as on the stage. Her former professor, Harvey Young, spoke to the Chicago Tribune about Meghan’s studies.
He said of Meghan’s work in his class on contemporary African-American theatre: “She was very clear about the need to think about the experiences of people who are not only biracial but people of colour. She was mindful of the need for gender equality and the importance of championing for women’s rights.”
Meghan was said to be part of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, where she was said to have “fit right in”.
Coulter Bump, one of Meghan’s sisters, reportedly told the Chicago Tribune: “Myself and most of my sisters agreed that she is just a really lovely person.”
She then added: “She always had this manner to her of being dignified and poised, just very appropriate in every circumstance.”
So it sounds like Meghan was enthusiastic when it came to academia and sorority life. But was she popular with her fellow students?

Meghan Markle’s former college classmate speaks out
Chatting in 2023, royal expert and host of the To Di for Daily podcast, Kinsey Schofield, shared insights from a alleged conversation with one of Meghan’s former classmates who explained the duchess kept to herself and was not particularly friendly whilst at university.
The anonymous classmate detailed how Meghan’s beauty was undeniable, but her behaviour implied an air of self-importance.
They allegedly said: “She [Meghan] was strikingly beautiful at school. But she also acted like she was beautiful, and that she was going to do something with herself so, she really didn’t give other people the time of day.”
The Daily Express UK stated that Schofield asked the source a direct question about Meghan’s demeanour during her time at college.
Schofield asked “was she nice?” and the classmate reportedly replied: “No.”
Meghan Markle’s college major
Discussing her time at university, Meghan told Marie Claire in 2013 of her hopes for the future and avoiding the LA girl cliché. She said: “I wanted more than that, and I had always loved politics, so I ended up changing my major completely, and double-majoring in theatre and international relations.”
Despite some division over whether Meghan was well-liked during her time at Northwestern, her college best friend Lindsay Roth appears to have upheld a close relationship with the duchess.

Producer and author Lindsay released her new book – Romances & Practicalities: A Love Story (Maybe Yours!) in 250 Questions – this year, where she included a sweet book dedication to Meghan.
Her dedication read: “Meghan Sussex, Meg, to be sisters by choice, still thinking the same thing at the same time after all these years – no matter how many miles between us – is my favourite part of our unbreakable bond.
“There for each other always, sharing a deep loyalty and understanding — I could tell you anything, and it would be okay. I carry your heart (I carry it in my heart).”
