Kate Middleton's ‘nervous’ remark at Six Nations rugby match with Prince William as couple became ‘rivals’
Kate was seen sharing a hushed exchange with the RFU President
Prince William and Kate Middleton found themselves on opposing sides at the Wales vs England Six Nations rugby match on Saturday, March 15, with Kate appearing to let slip a “nervous” whisper ahead of the game.
The royal couple attended the match at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. Prince William cheered for Wales as Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), while Princess Kate supported England in her role as Patron of the Rugby Football Union (RFL).

As the game began, Kate was seen sitting beside Rob Udwin, President of the RFU. The pair appeared to share a quiet exchange.
According to a lip reader who spoke to The Mirror, Kate remarked: “He is nervous, I can see he is.”
“He is certainly not an amateur,” Rob responded.
Kate agreed, saying: “He certainly is not.”
“He is very impressive,” Rob added.
“He plays very well, as I imagined,” Kate nodded.
Meanwhile, Prince William sat next to Kate, accompanied by Terry Cobner, President of the WRU.
This isn’t the first time the Prince and Princess of Wales have engaged in rugby rivalry. In 2023, after a Wales vs England match, William joked that it would be a “tense journey home” if his wife’s team won.
Their sporting passions have always played a big role in their relationship, as Kate grew up in a rugby-loving family.
Her sister, Pippa Middleton, revealed to Vanity Fair in 2014: “Rugby was a big thing for our family. We’d plan our weekends around the big matches.”
Meanwhile, William, a life-long supporter of Welsh rugby, has been a vocal patron of the WRU since 2016.

William and Kate open up about George and Louis’ hobbies
Before the match, William and Kate met with injured players supported by the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust in the Sir Tasker Watkins Suite.
The trust, which William has been Patron of since 2016, supports players who have suffered severe injuries while playing rugby in Wales, along with their families.
During their visit, the Prince and Princess of Wales also shared a rare glimpse into their children Prince George and Prince Louis’ hobbies.
“At weekends, we go from one competition to the next,” William revealed.
Kate added: “Louis is six, and he’s just started touch rugby, and George is 11, and he plays a bit more. They do really enjoy it.”

She also highlighted how all three of their children, including Princess Charlotte, have been exposed to a wide range of sports.
“They’ve been exposed to lots of different sports,” Kate noted.
Princess Kate’s gradual return to public duties
The couple’s joint appearance at the rugby match comes as Kate continues her gradual return to public life following her battle with cancer. After confirming she is now in remission, the Princess of Wales has begun resuming royal duties.
In a statement shared in January, she expressed gratitude for the support she had received.
Kate said: “It is a relief to now be in remission, and I remain focused on recovery. As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal.
“I am, however, looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.”
