At the weekend, the Princess of Wales, 43, attended the England vs Wales Six Nations rugby match in Cardiff alongside her husband Prince William.
But fans noticed that Kate Middleton wasn’t wearing her iconic sapphire engagement ring and had replaced it for a more understated band, an eternity ring.
The change has sparked some fan theories online as many speculated why Kate had swapped rings for the occasion.

Back in 2010, Prince William proposed to Kate with his late mother Princess Diana’s engagement ring. It features a 12-carat, oval-cut Ceylon blue sapphire from Sri Lanka.
Despite still wearing the ring on some occasions, at the weekend, Kate was seen wearing a more understated ring. She appeared to be wearing a stack of rings, including her wedding band and an eternity ring.
Fans immediately picked up on the change, with one person saying on X: “The Princess of Wales seems to be alternating between her engagement ring and this new one, which is most likely a gift from Prince William. I wonder what makes her choose one or the other for her engagements, though this new ring does seem to be her favourite.”

Speculation became rife over Kate’s choice of ring, with many wondering whether her sapphire ring gets in the way during royal engagements.
One person speculated: “Just looking at it in practical terms, the new one is probably more comfortable to wear and it’s less likely to lose any stones or get damaged because of the low profile.”

Someone else spotted: “I’ve noticed she wears her engagement ring on more formal occasions, and the beautiful eternity band on occasions that are less formal and physical.”

Meanwhile, a couple of other fans noticed Kate wearing gloves during the rugby match.
One person said: “I noticed she was wearing gloves when watching the match. So I imagine that’s easier with this smaller ring.”
Another commented: “May have to do with wearing gloves. The flat ring is more comfortable under a glove!”

Meanwhile, Maxwell stone, creative director at Steven Stone, suggested a reason behind Kate’s decision: “While it’s not entirely unusual for Kate to go without her engagement ring at certain events, she has been seen wearing it less frequently in recent months.
“Given its striking 12-carat sapphire in a halo setting, comfort could be a simple reason.
“That said, Kate continues to show her love and commitment to Prince William in other ways. She appears to have been regularly wearing the eternity ring he gifted her to celebrate Prince George’s birth.”

Back in November 2010, during hers and Prince William’s engagement interview, Kate discussed the ring.
She gushed: “It’s beautiful—I hope I look after it. It’s very special.”
