Royal family nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo looks after Prince William and Princess Kates’s children George, Charlotte and Louis

Prince William and Princess Kate live very busy lives and aren’t always able to be around for their kids.

However, they have found a way of ensuring that their kids’ needs are always met, even when they’re not there – hiring a nanny!

From reportedly earning a ‘six-figure salary’ to apparently being banned from using a certain word, here’s a look at the life of a royal family nanny working for the Waleses children…

Royal nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo doesn’t live with the Wales family

Since Prince William, Kate and the family moved to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor in the summer of 2022, they don’t have a live-in nanny. But, it’s believed they still have a live-in nanny to help them with their three children.

The nanny in question is Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo from Spain.

She has been a nanny for the family since the young royal Prince George turned eight months old in 2014.

She has helped raise all three children – and regularly appears with them on outings and even at royal events.

Maria’s work doesn’t stop at the royals’ home – she also reportedly travels with them when they go abroad, and is in the background of some major royal events, such as weddings and Trooping the Colour.

Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo salary

Being a nanny to the royal kids isn’t a low-paying job by any means, suggest reports.

According to a piece in Marie Claire magazine, the Waleses nanny reportedly earns a salary in the region of $155,000 (£119k).

A nanny for the royals is also expected to have a certain set of, rather amazing, skills.

She is trained to dodge paparazzi, drive in extreme weather and practiced Taekwondo!

According to the Daily Mail, Taekwondo is the martial art of choice at Norland (the college Maria trained at). It has reportedly been “specially adapted to include how to dodge a potential kidnapper with a pram”.

Royal family nanny uniform

Surprisingly, there is a reported uniform for a Maria to wear as nanny to George, Charlotte, and Louis.

The outfit in question is a brown dress that reaches down past the knees and features a white collar. The look is topped off by a brown bowler hat, which looks like something Mary Poppins would wear!

The outfit was made to look the way it does to ensure that nannies don’t get mistaken for palace staff. It really does make them stand out.

Word they can’t ever use

As with every job, there are rules that come with it. Perhaps one of the most surprising ones, reportedly, in the role of a royal nanny is the use – or lack, thereof – of the word “kid”.

The word “kid” is allegedly banned in the royal household.

“It’s a mark of respect for the children as individuals,” a royal expert once told the Mirror.

However, other than the banned word, marital arts training, and paparazzi dodging, life as a royal nanny is apparently quite “normal”.

“I’ve spoken to nannies who have worked with other royal families and life is pretty normal. You get up, have breakfast, you go to school and you wear your school uniform whether you like it or not. It would be quite like the average British school child,” they then added.
