Prince William's 'plans to overhaul' royal tours over hopes of new 'approach to the monarchy'
William is looking to 'reshape' the traditional royal tours
Prince William is reportedly reshaping the royal rulebook when it comes to overseas visits, favouring short, impactful trips over the traditional long-haul tours.
The Prince of Wales, 41, recently undertook a rapid two-day visit to Estonia – seen by insiders as a glimpse of his vision for a modern monarchy.
The visit was hailed as a “deployment of soft power on the global stage”. It marks a key shift in the future king’s approach to international diplomacy.
According to a royal source speaking to The Sunday Times, “What you saw last week is a short, impactful trip that showcased an important issue. It’s a model you’re likely to see more of.”
The move is said to reflect not only a shift in royal strategy but also William’s personal priorities. These include spending more time with his children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5.

Prince William plans to reshape royal tours
William himself hinted at this evolution last year during his Earthshot Prize visit to South Africa.
During a speech, the Prince of Wales shared his hopes for a more modern and human approach to royal duty.
“I’m trying to do it differently and I’m trying to do it for my generation,” he explained. “I’m doing it with maybe a smaller R in the royal, if you like. It’s more about impact philanthropy, collaboration, convening, and helping people. And I’m also going to throw empathy in there as well, because I really care about what I do.
“It helps impact people’s lives. And I think we could do with some more empathetic leadership around the world.”
While William and Princess Kate haven’t ruled out traditional royal tours entirely, aides say the couple are conscious of not spending extended time away from their children.
“The idea of the short, sharp trip that has impact is one that works from a storytelling and diplomatic perspective,” an insider explained to The Sunday Times.
“He was in Estonia for under 36 hours. One minute he’s sat with the president, the next he’s taking selfies with Estonians, then he’s taking part in a military exercise near the Russian border. In terms of diplomacy and the role the family has to play, that is an example of what they can deliver.”
Royal Insider has approached Kensington Palace for comment.

William takes short trip to Estonia
During his time in Estonia, William met with President Alar Karis, chatted with locals during a walkabout in Tallinn, and joined British troops at Tapa military base just 90 miles from the Russian border.
He played table football and pool with soldiers and examined welfare facilities at the camp.
The trip – although brief – was packed with important engagements. His visit reflects a growing trend of William’s “statesmanlike work” in recent months.
He’s also recently met with key world leaders. These include the Emir of Qatar, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and US President Donald Trump in Paris.

Prince William takes on role of ‘global statesman’
The Prince’s new approach contrasts sharply with the old royal model, especially that of Queen Elizabeth II.
The late Queen famously embarked on a six-month Commonwealth tour in the early 1950s shortly after her coronation.
Even King Charles, 76, continued the tradition with an 11-day tour of Australia and Samoa last year and is preparing for a state visit to Italy and the Holy See.
But William is signalling a different direction – one more compatible with the demands of modern parenthood and 21st-century diplomacy.
The source confirmed that the role of a “global statesman is really important” to William.
With a renewed focus on empathy, environmental advocacy, and international collaboration, William’s model of shorter, high-impact tours may become the blueprint for royal engagements moving forward.
