Prince Harry has reportedly been left ‘reeling’ after Sentebale charity issued a response to the news he had decided to stand down.

The prince created the charity in 2006 in memory of his late mother to help Aids orphans in Southern Africa. But yesterday (March 26) a statement was issued that announced his departure.

After Prince Harry’s shock resignation, the charity hit back with its own message, and sources believe that Harry will be left reeling over it.

Prince Harry ‘reeling’ over Sentebale response

The charity posted a message on social media. It read: “While Trustees are key for governance and regulation, and Patrons – especially Founders – are an honour to have, it is the people in the field who are advancing the work. No matter what.”

Sentebale also reiterated its commitment to supporting young people, even without Prince Harry.

It’s believed that the board of trustees formally requested that Chair of its Board, Sophie Chanduaka resigned from her position. But she declined. When they tried to move through with the vote, she filed a legal challenge at the High Court to prevent their meeting.

There is no formal record of proceedings at the Royal Courts of Justice. But it is claimed that the court did not grant an injunction. And the meeting was cancelled.

Ms Chanduaka released her own statement regarding the news. She wrote: “There are people in this world who behave as though they are above the law and mistreat people. Then play the victim card and use the very press they disdain to harm people who have the courage to challenge their conduct.”

According to the Daily Mail, a source who has known Harry since Sentebale was founded, said he wouldn’t be happy after the statement.

They said: “There is no way of sugar-coating the damage of this. Regardless of who is in the right. He will be reeling.”

Why did Harry step down?

The drama centres around Sentebale’s decision to centralise its command structure from London to Southern Africa. This was to better ‘reflect’ the region and its needs.

It sparked a wave of departures following what it called a ‘restructuring’ of its board. But it prompted backlash against Ms Chanduaka, who was appointed chair in July 2023.

Yesterday (March 26) prince Harry and his co-founder Prince Seeiso released a joined statement saying they were “truly heartbroken” about the developments in the charity, and announced they were stepping down in solidarity with the board of trustees.

In their statement they admitted the relationship between the trustees and the chair of the board had “broke down beyond repair, creating an untenable situation”.

They explained that the trustees “acted in the best interest of the charity” by asking Ms Chanduaka to step down. But instead her decision to take legal action was “further underscoring the broken relationship”.
