King Charles undergoes hospital observation following cancer treatment side-effects
Buckingham Palace has issued an updateKing Charles required hospital observation on Thursday as he continues his treatment for a type of cancer, Buckingham Palace has said.
His Majesty sought medical advice after experiencing “temporary side-effects” from his treatment for cancer, which is ongoing.
The 76-year-old had to postpone events in his royal diary yesterday afternoon as well as today (Friday, March 28).

The monarch sent his apologies to fans who may be “inconvenienced or disappointed” over the postponed events in his diary.

The king had a jam-packed week beforehand, surprising sister Princess Anne at St James’s Palace, reception for media and journalists as well as a visit to a soil exhibition. He also supported wife Queen Camilla as she unveiled her Reading Room medal this week.
Charles announced his cancer diagnosis in February last year, after undergoing a procedure for an enlarged prostate. The palace has not disclosed what form of cancer King Charles has, but did clarify it was not prostate cancer.
It’s believed his planned trip to Italy with Queen Camilla is still going ahead.

Buckingham Palace statement in full
The palace made the announcement late on Thursday evening as King Charles needed time to consult his staff and medical team.
A Buckingham Palace statement reads: “Following scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer this morning, The King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital.
“His Majesty’s afternoon engagements were therefore postponed.
“His Majesty has now returned to Clarence House and as a precautionary measure, acting on medical advice, tomorrow’s diary programme will also be rescheduled.”
It continued: “His Majesty would like to send his apologies to all those who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result.”
A palace spokesperson also added: “His majesty was due to receive credentials from the ambassadors of three different nations this afternoon.
“Tomorrow he was due to undertake four public engagements in Birmingham, and is greatly disappointed to be missing them on this occasion.
“He very much hopes that they can [be] rescheduled in due course and offers his deepest apologies to all those who had worked so hard to make the planned visit possible.”

King Charles cancer update
Following King Charles cancer diagnosis, his royal diary has been developed with his medical team throughout his treatment.
When the palace announced his cancer, they only confirmed it was a “form of cancer” and asked for privacy for the monarch.
They said a “separate issue of concern was noted” while he was being treated for a benign prostate condition.
In December 2024, the latest King Charles cancer update, the palace said His Majesty’s “treatment has been moving in a positive direction”, adding the treatment will continue into 2025.

After returning to Clarence House on Thursday, it’s believed Charles was in good spirits. Reports say he worked on state papers from his study.
Queen Camilla did not join Charles during his brief hospital visit, and he travelled to and from The London clinic by car. It is the same hospital where the monarch was treated for an enlarged prostate.
It’s believed the side-effects were temporary and not uncommon with many medical treatment plans, but the type have not been revealed.
