King Charles has been sent a message of support by Donald Trump, just days after the monarch was hospitalised.

King Charles, 76, was forced to return to hospital on Thursday (March 27) after suffering side effects from his cancer treatment.

King Charles hospitalised amid cancer treatment

Last week, Buckingham Palace revealed that the king required hospital observation after suffering “temporary side-effects” from his cancer treatment.

In a statement, the palace said: “Following scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer this morning, the king experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital.

“His Majesty’s afternoon engagements were therefore postponed. His Majesty has now returned to Clarence House and as a precautionary measure, acting on medical advice, tomorrow’s diary programme will also be rescheduled.”

They then added: “His Majesty would like to send his apologies to all those who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result.”

The king was first diagnosed with cancer last year. He hasn’t revealed which type of cancer he is receiving treatment for.

Donald Trump sends message of support to King Charles

Last week, President Donald Trump spoke to the UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, ahead of a 25% tax on car imports, and wider tariffs on other goods.

Downing Street has only a few days to negotiate an exemption from tariffs on imports into the US. Talks and negotiations between the two leaders are said to be intense.

The president opened by wishing His Majesty the king best wishes and good health.

During the recent call, as well as discussing the ongoing negotiations, the president also took the opportunity to send a message of support to the king.

A spokesperson for Downing Street said: “The prime minister spoke to president Trump this evening. The president opened by wishing His Majesty the king best wishes and good health.”

Trump reacts to King Charles’ Commonwealth offer

Earlier this month, reports emerged claiming that the king could offer the US the opportunity to join Commonwealth of Nations.

A source at the Royal Commonwealth Society has claimed the idea of America making entry into the Commonwealth is “being discussed at the highest levels”. It would symbolise a close relationship between the nations.

“Donald Trump loves Britain and has great respect for the royal family, so we believe he would see the benefits of this,” the source added.

Trump himself saw the reports, and posted about them on his TruthSocial account.

“I love King Charles,” he said, sharing an article about the king’s rumoured offer.

“Sounds good to me!” he added.

Americans fume over Trump’s comments

However, some Americans were left livid by the president’s remarks about Charles’ rumoured offer.

Radio host and conspiracy theorist, Alex Jones claimed that civil war would erupt if it meant that the king was the head of the US government.

Some Americans have shot the idea down, claiming it’ll never happen.

“Not gonna happen. This is Trump’s America, he would never hand anything American over to King Charles,” one said.

“This is nonsense. Even if the U.S. did join the Commonwealth the king would not be the head of state. There are currently over 30 Commonwealth countries where the British monarch is NOT the head of state,” another said.

King Charles is Head of the Commonwealth, however, it’s more of a symbolic role. The king’s position helps link the 56 independent countries part of the association, but he does not have any constitutional power or authority in any of the member states.
