Queen Elizabeth II didn’t attend King Charles and Queen Camilla’s civil ceremony when they tied the knot in 2005.

However, according to a royal expert, the late queen was “very proud” of her son and his bride.

Here’s an inside look at the late queen’s true feelings towards King Charles‘ marriage to the now queen consort…

Charles and Camilla’s wedding

This year will mark King Charles and Queen Camilla‘s 20th wedding anniversary. However, their romance actually stretches back over 50 years.

The royal couple first met back in 1970 at a polo match. They were together for a short time, however, Charles’ time in the navy pushed them apart.

Camilla’s rehabilitation has been extraordinary and I think the late queen played a major role in that.

By the time the young prince was back home, Camilla had moved on and married Tom Parker Bowles.

Charles also moved on in time, and in 1981 he married Princess Diana. However, Camilla never really left his thoughts. Five years later, they reportedly began an affair.

Their affair was exposed in Andrew Morton’s 1992 book, Diana: Her True Story, by Diana herself.

This eventually led to Charles and Diana splitting and divorcing.

In 1995, Diana spoke about Charles and Camilla’s affair in her Panorama interview. Both Charles and Camilla faced huge backlash, and her reputation took a hit.

In 1997, following Diana’s death, it looked as though Camilla and Charles would never be able to make their romance official and public.

However, despite all the odds, Camilla managed to turn things around.

Speaking to OK! magazine, royal expert Katie Nicholls said: “Camilla Parker Bowles was actually quite extraordinary from the outset. When you consider the public hatred she had to deal with, the intense media attention and scrutiny, being the most reviled woman in Britain… obviously it wasn’t easy.

“And yet she went about her life, she looked after her children and she got through it. I think that gives you an indication as to the mettle of this woman.”

Queen Elizabeth II’s approval for Charles’ wedding

Reports claim that the late queen initially had reservations about Charles and Camilla’s romance.

Because of her doubts, she reportedly opted not to go to Charles’ 50th birthday party, knowing that Camilla would be there.

According to reports, in 2000, Charles introduced his mother to Camilla. They first met at a luncheon for King Constantine of Greece at Highgrove.

Slowly but surely, the queen’s attitude towards Camilla began to thaw.

In 2005, she gave the royal couple permission to tie the knot. They did so in a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall on April 9, 2005.

The queen didn’t attend the ceremony itself.

However, according to Katie, during a service of prayer at St George’s Chapel, the late queen gave an “unusually sentimental speech” in which she said she was “very proud” of her son and Camilla.

Queen Elizabeth makes major decision for Charles and Camilla

In 2022, the queen made a major decision that showed just how far she’d come with her relationship with Camilla.

During her platinum jubilee celebrations, she announced that when Charles became king, she wanted Camilla to be known as Queen Consort.

This not only signalled that the queen had fully accepted Camilla, but also showed conveyed her respect for her son’s marriage.

“Camilla’s rehabilitation has been extraordinary and I think the late queen played a major role in that,” Katie said. “And, of course, that word ‘consort’ has been dropped since the coronation. She is Queen Camilla and that was always how Charles wanted it. Today, there is no doubt that our king and his ‘darling wife’, as he regularly refers to her, are as in love as ever.”
