Kate Middleton and Prince William‘s idyllic wedding day is a moment in royal modern history that will be remembered forever.

A fresh-faced Kate Middleton sported an iconic lace dress with intricate sleeves, an elegant high-neck and a flowing white satin skirt – a style that would be replicated for years to come.

The stunning 29-year-old’s ensemble embodied the perfect mixture of traditional modesty and chic style. Although the dreamy Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen dress was a total crowd pleaser, it seems that Kate’s appearance didn’t fulfil every royal expectation.

In fact, the now Princess of Wales may have bent the rules a little bit…

Kate Middleton’s rule bending on wedding day

The Prince and Princess of Wales are usually understanding when they are expected to fall in line. However, on her big day, Kate Middleton reportedly wanted one small detail her way.

For 350 years, it was customary for the bride at a royal wedding to wear her hair up.

But back in 2011, on the day of her fairytale wedding ceremony, Kate opted for a loose, undone hairstyle which hung beautifully in ringlets around her shoulders.

Despite Kate not having a hair out of place, her curled hairstyle apparently endured pushback from The Firm.

Royal expert Ashley Pearson dished in the documentary William & Kate: The Journey, via Express: “Royal sources tell me that the royals indicated very strongly to Kate that they would prefer her to wear her hair up for this very special occasion.”

She continued: “Kate had her heart set on wearing her hair down with long flowing curls.”

Pearson explained that this wasn’t only one of Kate’s favourite looks, it was also favoured by Prince William.

“They ended up compromising on her look,” Pearson confirmed.

Kate’s approach to royal life with William

Royal commentator Amanda Matta also explains that this move says a lot about Kate’s personality.

She told The List: “The late Queen Elizabeth II was known for valuing tradition, but Kate’s polished yet relaxed approach to her wedding day look showed that she could honour royal expectations while still being herself.”

Matta also states how Kate’s ability to appear so at home amidst royal life whilst still keeping her own unique personality explains why she is so loved by royal observers.

“While she hasn’t been known to push boundaries outright, she has made subtle adjustments to royal norms. Repeating outfits, championing high-street fashion, and adopting trousers while on official engagements. As queen, she will likely continue to embody a thoughtful mix of tradition and modern relevance — adapting to the times without straying from the core values of a very traditional monarchy,” Matt detailed.
