Over the years, Donald Trump has very publicly spoken about his relationship with King Charles and the royal family.

The President of the United States always seemed to praise the late Queen Elizabeth II, despite breaking quite a few rules when meeting her.

As Donald Trump arrives in the UK this week for his second state visit, what has he actually said about the royal family members over the years?

Well, from his comments on Prince William’s appearance to Prince Harry’s deportation scandal, here is a rundown of what Donald Trump has said about the royal family.

Trump and Queen Elizabeth II

In 2019, Trump met with Queen Elizabeth II on his first state visit to the UK. But during the visit he walked in front of her, something fans thought was disrespectful.

And while Trump may have thought the visit went well, it was reported that Queen Elizabeth actually found him “very rude” – which he did not like to hear.

Speaking about the queen’s reported thoughts, Trump dismissed them. He said to the Daily Mail: “I have no idea who the writer is, but it was really just the opposite. I had a great relationship with the queen. She liked me, and I liked her.

“We spent hours together at a state dinner. She was a fantastic woman. I think it’s a shame that a sleaze bag can write an article that is totally false. In fact, I have always heard the opposite.”

He went on to claim he was her “favourite president” and was adamant that she had said it “to a lot of people”.

Donald Trump’s relationship with King Charles

When King Charles was diagnosed with cancer, Trump immediately praised him as a “wonderful man”.

He wrote on his Truth Social platform in all caps: “King Charles has cancer. He is a wonderful man who I got to know well during my presidency. We all pray that he has a fast and full recovery.”

During his earlier presidency, Trump met with Charles on numerous occasions while he was visiting the UK. He even had tea at Clarence House, where it’s believed he kept Charles waiting for an hour.

Speaking last year about the king, Trump admitted they have “different views” but they “get along”.

Recently, Trump offered his take on reports His Majesty could extend the offer of the USA joining the Commonwealth of Nations.

The president took to his own social media platform, Truth Social, writing: “I love King Charles. Sounds good to me!”

As he travelled to Britain on September 16 for his second state visit, Trump told reporters: “It’s an honour to have him as king. I think he represents the country so well. He’s such an elegant gentleman.”

Trump admitted Prince William ‘looks better in person’

Donald Trump’s relationship with the royal family extends past King Charles. He has met with Prince William also on numerous occasions. And it seems he has some comments on his appearance.

In 2024, Trump met Prince William in Paris and he was apparently shocked at how he looked. Trump said: “He looked really, really handsome last night. Some people look better in person. He looked great. He looked really nice and I told him that.”

Trump also revealed that he and William had spoken about King Charles and Princess Kate’s cancer diagnoses. Both were diagnosed with cancer in early 2024.

Trump said: “I asked him about his wife and he said she’s doing well. I asked him about his father and his father is fighting very hard, and he loves his father and he loves his wife, so it was sad.”

However, it’s not only William’s appearance that Trump is a fan of, but also his relationship with Kate. And as a huge fan of the couple, there’s reports that they could be the ones to strengthen relationships.

Kate Middleton criticised by Trump

Way back in 2012, Princess Kate was photographed sunbathing topless and Donald Trump voiced his opinion.

After the pics were released, Trump tweeted: “Who wouldn’t want to take Kate’s picture and make lots of money if she does the nude sunbathing thing. Come on, Kate!”

However, he clearly didn’t think it was that big of a deal (but apparently William did). When Kate was going through her cancer journey in 2024, Trump sent his well wishes.

He said: “It is a rough period. The whole family is having a rough period.”

Donald Trump’s harsh comments on Prince Harry

Earlier in 2025, Trump decided that Prince Harry would not be deported regarding his visa fiasco. And one of the reasons is because he feels sorry for him because he is married to Meghan Markle.

Speaking about his decision to not deport Harry, Trump told the New York Post: “I don’t want to do that. I will leave him alone. He’s got enough problems with his wife, she is horrible.”

He also stated that he believes Harry is “whipped” and is “being led around by the nose”.

However, before he was elected president again, Trump admitted he would not “protect” Harry after the decisions the prince had made.

He told Daily Express US: “I wouldn’t protect him. He betrayed the queen. That is unforgivable. He would be on his own if it was down to me.”

Donald Trump’s ‘feud’ with Meghan Markle

When Harry and Meghan Markle first moved to the US, Trump made it clear he is “not a fan of hers” at a White House briefing, but wished the couple luck.

Before this, Trump had been complimentary about the Duchess of Sussex.

But then in 2021, with an interview with Nigel Farage, Trump expanded on his dislike for Meghan.

He said: “I am not a fan of hers. I wasn’t from day one. Harry has been used horribly and I think some day he will regret it. I think he has been used and used terribly. It has ruined his relationship with the family. And it hurt the queen. She [Meghan] is trying to things that I think are very inappropriate.”
