Princess Diana’s mission to make Easter special for William and Harry

During their Easter holidays with Diana, William and Prince Harry were treated to trips to Thorpe Park, skiing holidays, and Easter egg hunts.

Speaking to The Mirror, Diana’s former protection officer, Ken Wharfe, opened up about what the princess would get up to with her sons.

Ken was in the role from 1987 to 1993.

“Diana was very much a hands-on mother and would organise the Easter egg hunt, but she’d get all the staff involved hiding them. They had some chickens there and I remember someone suggesting hiding some of the eggs in the coop,” he said.

“The boys were very competitive, so they’d be running around with no inhibitions trying to be the first to find them, badgering the staff to tell them where they were hidden!” he continued.

Skiing holidays abroad

The late princess also enjoyed taking her sons skiing over the Easter holidays some years.

Recalling their first winter sports holiday to Lech in Austria, Ken said that William and Harry picked up skiing “incredibly quickly”.

He also added that William and Harry enjoyed having pizza and chips for lunch while on their skiing trips.

Ken went on to say that the then Prince Charles knew that Diana was “better” at “entertaining” the boys.

“Charles knew that Diana was far better at being tactile and entertaining the boys, so he’d let her take the lead – she’d think up outings that he wouldn’t imagine, like going to Thorpe Park. They would have a tremendous time at Thorpe Park, getting soaked on the water rides. Diana asked to be treated exactly the same as the other customers,” he said.

This extended to queuing up to go on the rides, just like everyone else!

Diana, Harry, and William’s Easter breaks

Ken then went on to reveal that Diana – who died in August 1997 after a car crash in Paris – and the boys would also spend some time with Queen Elizabeth II during their Easter breaks.

He explained that they’d go to Windsor “at some point” during the holiday.

The royals usually joined the queen at Windsor at Easter. They would attend an Easter Sunday service at St. George’s Chapel before having a big lunch at Windsor Castle.

Ken then went on to say that he thinks Diana’s “sense of fun” has rubbed off on the boys. He added that they’re “passing it on” to their own kids now.

One final revelation from Ken is that Diana was “strict” with her sons on sweet treats. However, at Easter they were “less restricted” as it was a “special” occasion.
