Meghan Markle and Prince Harry brought back “abnormal” security precautions as they attended the TIME100 event in New York.

Harry and Meghan attended the TIME100 summit in New York City on Wednesday (April 23). The Duchess of Sussex was involved in a talk at the event.

But it seems they weren’t fully alone for the trip. They had a huge security team alongside them on their arrival.

It come weeks after Meghan, 43, faced criticism for her own security measures as she attended a Broadway show. But it seems this must be the new norm for the couple.

Arriving at the event, Meghan and Harry, 40, were reportedly followed by a four-vehicle motorcade. Photos published by Page Six show the couple had their own bodyguards at the event. While that’s normal, they were also followed by two SUVs and two unmarked police cars as part of their security team.

It comes after Meghan’s solo appearance at a recent Broadway show in New York earlier this month. She also apparently had a four-car motorcade.

A pap source had told Page Six it was “absolutely abnormal” for celebrity standards.

The insider said earlier this month: “Taylor [Swift] usually has two cars — her car that she’s in and a security car with her team.

“And if [Swift’s] going somewhere, she has a separate car on-site with her team already there, but they don’t travel together.”

Harry and Meghan’s ‘near catastrophic car chase’ in New York

Their heightened security comes after the Sussexes previously admitted they felt unsafe in New York. This was following a car incident in 2023 with the paparazzi. At the time, a spokesperson for the couple said they had been involved in a “near catastrophic car chase” with her mother, Doria Ragland.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) investigated the incident.

In a statement about the findings, the NYPD said: “The investigation had found reckless disregard of vehicle and traffic laws and persistently dangerous and unacceptable behaviour on the part of paparazzi during the night in question.”

Security is a huge talking point for the royals. Prince Harry recently headed to court to appeal a ruling about his protection whilst in the UK.

Prince Harry’s court case over security protection in the UK

Prince Harry was stripped of his automatic high-level security protection back in 2020 when he and Meghan gave up their working royal titles.

A decision was ruled that their security would be surveyed on a case-by-case basis instead. However, Harry wasn’t happy by this decision.

As the court case continues, Harry’s lawyer argued that he and Meghan were “forced” to leave royal life due to their lack of security.

In an appeal in the Royal Courts of Justice this month, Harry’s attorney explained that a lack of protection in the UK threatens his life.

As for who pays for Harry and Meghan’s security, the pair have relied on privately funded security teams since moving to the US. Whereas, the British taxpayer funds the security of senior royal family members.
