Sarah Ferguson says double cancer diagnoses was a ‘death sentence’ in heartbreaking health confession
Sarah Ferguson shared her second diagnosis last January
Sarah Ferguson has shared a devastating insight into her battle with cancer. The Duchess of York has opened up about just how difficult her double diagnosis has been.
The Duchess of York has been campaigning for more support for those also navigating the disease, amid her own ailments.
In a new update, the mother-of-two made a telling remark, highlighting just how traumatic such a serious health issue can be.

The 65-year-old told The Times that a dual diagnosis felt like a “bomb going off in my life.”
This life-altering moment, Sarah explains, felt like a “death sentence”.
“I was 63 when I was diagnosed with cancer for the first time and cancer at any age is traumatic,” she told the publication.
“But as adults, we have maturity and life experience to help us advocate for ourselves and cope with challenges. We can seek help if we need it and most importantly our voices are, sadly, often taken more seriously.”
The duchess is raising awareness for young people who are often left “to struggle alone with the dark thoughts,” that accompany being diagnosed with the disease.
Sarah Ferguson, who is also known as Fergie, is advocating for young people as patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Discussing the Trust’s latest campaign, Sarah explained the neglect of young cancer patients. She said: “One group I feel is consistently neglected by those developing health plans and policies is teenagers and young people.”

What type of cancer did Fergie have?
In 2023, Sarah Ferguson, who has been part of Teenage Cancer Trust’s work for 35 years, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Sadly, just months later in January 2024, she was diagnosed with skin cancer.
The duchess was initially diagnosed with an “early form of breast cancer.” Her diagnosis was detected during a routine mammogram screening.
Fergie then endured reconstructive surgery known as a mastectomy.
“Following her diagnosis with an early form of breast cancer this summer, Sarah, Duchess of York has now been diagnosed with malignant melanoma,” a representative for the Duchess of York told Fox News Digital at the time.

Whilst undergoing her mastectomy, the Duchess of York also had moles removed.
The moles were then tested and one was determined to be cancerous.
In her essay for The Times, Sarah explained just how much the disease has impacted her family.
She explained how both her father and stepfather died of cancer.
Fergie’s diagnoses came ahead of both Kate Middleton and King Charles facing undisclosed forms of the disease.
Princess Kate recently became a patron of the Royal Marsden hospital, where she received treatment for cancer. In January, Kate announced she was fortunately in remission.
The king continues to battle his diagnosis.
A Buckingham Palace source reportedly said last year that it was “a managed condition.”
