The Duchess of Sussex explained the 'code' the couple used when they began datingMeghan Markle has revealed why she and Prince Harry call each other ‘M’ and ‘H’ after all these years – and it’s simpler than you think.

The Duchess of Sussex appeared in her first-ever podcast interview yesterday, April 28, make up free and in good spirits. She joined her friend and fellow business entrepreneur Jamie Kern Lima on her podcast show to discuss motherhood, marriage and Meghan’s new company As Ever.
During the 90-minute interview, Meghan revealed she has personally dropped her surname ‘Markle’ and why she and Prince Harry call each other ‘M’ and ‘H’.

Why do Meghan Markle and Prince Harry call each other M and H?
The former Suits actress was asked by her pal why she and Prince Harry call each other ‘M’ and ‘H’ instead of their names – and Meghan Markle had a cute backstory for the answer.
She explained that the couple first referred to each other with just initials during the early days of their romance, and it’s stuck.
The mum-of-two revealed that they were forced to only speak in code during the first few months to keep their relationship a secret from the press and the public.
“Probably at the beginning of us dating, when everything was in code,” Meghan said.
“People didn’t know we were dating for, talk about memory lane, so long ago. I mean, it’ll be our seven-year wedding anniversary soon. I couldn’t tell anyone who I was dating, and who was keeping [the secret], so I think we were just on a letter basis.”
She added: “I like it. I love nicknames.”

Prince Harry’s nickname
During an official royal tour in South Africa Meghan Markle first called her husband Prince Harry ‘H’ in public in 2019.
The couple still used the nicknames when their Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan was released in December 2022.
Prince Harry’s nickname was also heard when he went on the James Corden’s The Late Late Show several months earlier.
The Duke of Sussex FaceTimes his wife while on the show and host James takes the prince’s phone while she is on the video call.
“Hi, Meghan,” he said. “Listen, I have got to talk to you about something serious. I think this is where you should live,” he explains gesturing to a gorgeous mansion behind him.
“I don’t think there’s anything cooler,” James insists.
But Meghan jests: “I think we’ve done enough moving,” before she calls her husband “Haz”.
James turns to Prince Harry and asks about the moniker, before Harry jokes he isn’t his ‘wife’ so he can’t call him that.

Meghan Markle’s nickname
When it comes to the Duchess of Sussex, her name Meghan is actually already a nickname, because it is Markle’s middle name.
She was born Rachel Meghan Markle, to parents Doria Ragland and father Thomas Markle in 1981.
The 43-year-old prefers her middle name and has not explicitly explained why she doesn’t use her first name Rachel.
But in her Netflix cooking show, With Love, Meghan, the royal explained that the Sussex title she received from the late Queen is vitally important to her and her family. She refers to herself as Meghan Sussex now, and says her children also use that name as well.
Similarly to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children who use the surname Wales in certain settings.

What is Prince Harry’s actual last name?
Prince Harry’s full name is Henry Charles Albert David Mountbatten-Windsor and it’s quite a mouthful. His first name isn’t actually Harry but the nickname stuck since he was a child.
On Archie’s birth certificate, Harry doesn’t have an official surname, instead his first and middle names are given as well as the Duke of Sussex.
It was his grandfather Prince Philip who insisted his children and grandchildren use the surname after he married the late Queen Elizabeth II. At the time, the royal family surname was known as Windsor, from the royal House of Windsor. However, Philip was upset none of his offspring would bear his name.
Several years later, the Queen made a change, altering the last name to Mountbatten-Windsor to honour their heritage and her husband.
