Iconic moment Princess Charlotte stuck her tongue out in front of photographers and embarrassed Kate Middleton

Royal or not, children will often cause awkward moments for their parents. On numerous occasions Princess Charlotte has been spotted sticking her tongue out to the crowds or even having a tantrum.
Royal photographer Zak Hussein looked back at the time he captured Charlotte’s iconic moment at The King’s Cup regatta, and how Kate Middleton tried to swoop in to stop the princess.
Princess Charlotte sticks her tongue out at the paparazzi
Zak Hussein previously reminisced over catching Princess Charlotte sticking her tongue out on the Isle of Wight in 2019.
In that year, Prince William and Kate Middleton organised and competed in a charity regatta for eight of the charities of which they are patrons.
During The King’s Cup regatta, William and Kate competed against each other as they posed as skippers for two of the eight boats.
Prince William’s boat took home third place, while Kate’s team finished last.
After the sailing race, Kate encouraged her daughter to wave to onlookers who crowded in front of the window.
But Charlotte had other ideas.
Instead the young royal who the spotlight after she was caught pulling a face in front of the crowd.
Kate was left slightly embarrassed by her daughter’s antics and tried to pull her daughter away from the window.

Talking about the moment, Zak said: “She was with Kate and suddenly there was this huge crowd there gathered to see them. And Charlotte just for a split second stuck her tongue out at the crowd.
He also added: “There’s a great moment where Kate’s just kind of pulling her face laughing and sort of embarrassed by her daughter.”
One possible theory for Princess Charlotte’s antics was that she had actually spotted her grandfather Michael Middleton and was pulling faces at him.

But this was not the first time that Princess Charlotte has been spotted doing something cheeky.
Kate’s second eldest child was also caught sticking her tongue out on another very special royal occasion.
While being driven to St George’s Chapel for Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding, the princess was captured doing the same gesture.
Royal tantrum
It’s not the first time she’s caused a stir for mum Kate, when Princess Charlotte was two years old, she was given a stern telling off by the Princess of Wales.
The youngster was having a tantrum at the end of their royal tour in Germany in 2017, and she did it in front of cameras!
The toddler caused a scene at the airport in Hamburg, after the Wales’ two-day visit to the country as well as Poland. Before heading home they were looking at helicopters but Princess Charlotte had other ideas. She had had enough of it all.
The young royal appeared frustrated when she couldn’t hold a set of papers the host had handed over to her parents. Therefore, she began jumping up and down, stamping her feet and fell onto the floor in the middle of her temper tantrum.
Mum Kate swooped in to deal with the chaos, giving her child a telling off before picking her up off the floor. She then kneeled down to speak to Charlotte on her level, and she pointed to the cameras in a bid to remind the little one she was being filmed. We bet Kate Middleton had no idea more embarrassing moments were on the way though, like Princess Charlotte sticking her tongue out only a few years later!

Reacting to William and Kate’s PDA
Other than sticking her tongue out to the cameras, Princess Charlotte was even more relatable when she reacted to her parents’ sweet kiss.
Following Kate completing her chemotherapy treatment, the Prince and Princess of Wales released a sweet home video with their children in September 2024.
But in one moment – and blink and you may miss it – we see Charlotte look shocked at her parents’ enjoying a sweet peck. Towards the end of the video, while the family of five are on the beach, celebrating Kate ending her treatment, the future king plants a kiss on his wife’s cheek when she lies in the sand. And you can see Charlotte with a shocked expression on her face.
