There have been numerous cancer diagnoses in the royal family

Sarah Ferguson has made gushing comments about her former brother-in-law King Charles after he opened up on his cancer journey.

The 65-year-old made a surprise appearance at Buckingham Palace yesterday (April 30). She joined Charles at a reception in recognition of the work of community-based cancer care projects.

Over the years, the royal family has been hit with numerous cancer diagnoses, including both Charles and Sarah. The event came one year after she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. That’s not Sarah’s only diagnosis, as she revealed she had breast cancer in June 2023. She underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery at the time.

King Charles gave a message to those in attendance, where he explained getting a cancer diagnosis is “daunting” and “frightening”.

The king, 76, went on to praise those who work hard to make life easier for those living with cancer, and acknowledged that he was part of that group.

Charles was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer early last year, and had to step back from his royal duties briefly. At the same time, his daughter-in-law Kate, Princess of Wales, was also diagnosed with cancer and she took a long break to focus on her recovery.

He always puts his whole heart into everything he does.

Sarah, who was formerly married to Prince Andrew, gushed about the king’s way of working at the event. She expressed she was delighted to have been “kindly invited” to the event by Charles himself.

She said at Buckingham Palace: “I think the king is an absolutely brilliant example on revolutionising the discussion around cancer.”

But Sarah went on to praise the way Charles will always put his most into anything that he does.

She said: “Also, he does that in everything he does. He always puts his whole heart into everything he does.”

Sarah opened up on cancer diagnosis

She spoke to The Times, and revealed that it felt like she was handed “a death sentence”.

Sarah told the outlet: “I was 63 when I was diagnosed with cancer for the first time. And cancer at any age is traumatic.

“But as adults we have maturity and life experience to help us advocate for ourselves and cope with the challenges.”

She admitted it felt like a “bomb” was going off in her life when she heard the news.

Sarah, also known as Fergie, has been a huge voice in raising awareness for cancer patients. Just last week, she attended a cancer unit alongside her daughters.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are honorary patrons of Teenage Cancer Trust, as well as Fergie.

The trio met with young people and their families who are currently staying on the unit. They also gave thanks to the NHS and youth workers supporting them.
