You may be wondering if Prince William has a new title following his recent trip to Scotland with wife Kate.

While most people know them as the Prince and Princess of Wales, Prince William and Kate go by very different titles when they travel north of the border.

For many royal fans, this detail might come as a surprise.

Does Prince William have a new title?

The Prince of Wales doesn’t have a new title as such. But following his recent visit to Scotland, many fans wondered if he did.

When in Scotland, Prince William and Princess Kate are known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay. But the couple gained these titles in 2022.

These titles date back centuries and are traditionally bestowed upon the heir to the Scottish throne and his wife.

As my heir, William now assumes the Scottish titles which have meant so much to me.

The title Duke of Rothesay has been held by the male heir to the Scottish crown since 1469. It remains one of the most historically significant royal titles in Scotland.

When King Charles ascended the throne following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, he immediately passed on the Scottish titles to his eldest son.

“As my heir, William now assumes the Scottish titles which have meant so much to me,” King Charles said at the time.

With that declaration, Kate automatically became the Duchess of Rothesay.

William and Kate visit Scotland

On April 29, the royal couple took a two-day tour of the Inner Hebrides.

But in official announcements and throughout the trip, they were referred to by their Scottish titles.

While touring Mull and Iona, William and Kate were also referred to as the Lord and Lady of the Isles. This is another powerful historical title associated with Scottish nobility.

Prince William inherited the Lord of the Isles title after King Charles III ascended to the throne.

Before becoming the Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate were known for over a decade as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

These titles were gifted to them by Queen Elizabeth II on their wedding day in April 2011.

Following the Queen’s death, King Charles immediately passed on the Wales and Cornwall titles to his eldest son.

Meanwhile, Kate’s evolving royal journey includes becoming the Princess of Wales, a title famously held by Princess Diana.

What will William be called when he’s king?

Prince William is the current heir to the throne.

When he becomes king, he could be known as King William V.

However, he has the option of picking a new regnal name – potentially from his other names. The prince’s full name is William Arthur Philip Louis.

Therefore, he could choose any of those names when he’s king. His great-grandfather, King George VI, was actually born with the first name Albert. But when he became king, he chose to reign as King George VI.
