Today is the 80th anniversary of VE Day, which marks the end of the Second World War. Earlier this week the royals all appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for a flypast.

Queen Elizabeth II VE Day recording released

In 1945, Queen Elizabeth II (then Princess Elizabeth) merged in with the thousands of members of the public to attend VE Day celebrations from a different perspective.

30 years later, she recorded her memories of the day for a very special BBC broadcast. In honour of the 80th anniversary today, the royal family shared the recording.

Taking to Instagram, the official royal family account posted the voice recording with a heartfelt caption.

It began with a quote from Queen Elizabeth II: “‘I remember lines of unknown people linking arms and walking down Whitehall, all of us just swept along on a tide of happiness and relief.'”

The rest of the caption read: “On this day in 1945, Queen Elizabeth II pulled down her uniform cap and merged incognito into the crowds in central London to experience VE Day as one of tens of thousands of jubilant citizens celebrating the end of the Second World War.

“More than thirty years later, she recorded her memories for a unique BBC Broadcast.”

In the recording Queen Elizabeth II can be heard recalling when she “cheered the King and Queen” when they made their balcony appearance, before walking “miles” through the streets.

How utterly wonderful to hear her late Majesty’s memories!

Queen Elizabeth II joked that they “cheated” during the day because while the crowds were chanting to see the king, she had a message sent inside the house to tell them she was waiting outside.

The recording ended with the late Queen admitting it was “one of the most memorable nights” of her life.
