Queen Camilla spoke to a war veteran to hear his memories of VE Day on the 80th anniversary.

May 8 marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day – which marked the end of World War Two in 1945 after Germany’s armed forces surrendered.

Camilla, 77, met with veteran Douglas Cracknell at Clarence House last week. A sweet moment from their meeting was shared to the royal family’s official social media pages on Thursday to mark VE Day.

In the clip, Queen Camilla asked Douglas: “What do you remember about VE Day?”

Douglas replied: “I was in Bruges. They read it out that the war was over. And then it was chaos.”

“They were flocking around you and I woke up two days later in the bar,” he quipped.

Well they’re probably lost for a very good reason.

Camilla laughed as she said: “And you have no recollection other than that?”

Douglas said: “Two days of my life, I lost.”

Camilla added: “Well they’re probably lost for a very good reason. At least you were celebrating something wonderful.”

Douglas admitted: “It was absolutely chaos.”

Someone else gushed: “A very touching talking between the queen and the veteran.”

The king and queen were in attendance alongside Prince William and Kate and Prince Edward and wife Sophie. The royals watched a series of performances, including from Toploader and John Newman.

King Charles delivered a speech at the concert, paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in World War Two.

The monarch’s touching speech was delivered at 9pm, the exact same time that his grandfather, King George VI, made a radio broadcast on VE Day in 1945.

In one part, he said: “Now, as then, we are united in giving utmost thanks to all those who served in the Armed Forces, the uniformed services, the Home Front, indeed all the people of this country, the Commonwealth and beyond whose firm resolve and fortitude helped destroy Nazism and carry our allied nations through to V.E. Day. That debt can never truly be repaid; but we can, and we will, remember them.”
