Prince Harry and Meghan Markle followed an “American tradition” on their wedding day – but it was something Prince William and Kate weren’t keen on, apparently.

In his 2023 memoir Spare, Harry, 40, revealed that he and Meghan, 43, chose to follow the tradition at their 2018 royal wedding by seating couples together at the reception.

But according to the duke, this well-intentioned gesture clashed with Prince William and Princess Kate’s preferences.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s American ‘tradition’ at their wedding

“We weren’t too pleased when Willy and Kate switched place cards and changed seats at our wedding,” Harry wrote.

“We’d followed the American tradition, placing couples next to each other. But Willy and Kate didn’t like that tradition, so their table was the only one where spouses were apart.”

Harry claimed William and Kate denied responsibility for the change, saying it was someone else who made the swap. He also refuted their claim that Harry and Meghan had done the same thing at Pippa Middleton’s wedding.

But Willy and Kate didn’t like that tradition, so their table was the only one where spouses were apart.

“Much as we’d wanted to, we’d been separated by a huge flower arrangement between us,” Harry explained. “Though we’d desperately wanted to sit together, we hadn’t done a thing about it.”

The moment came up during a tense meeting between the two couples at Kensington Palace in June 2018, shortly after Harry and Meghan returned from their honeymoon.

The reconciliation attempt quickly devolved into a heated airing of grievances, according to Harry.

Harry described the sit-down as unproductive and emotionally draining. He wrote that the conversation failed to bridge the growing divide between the couples.

“None of this airing of grievances was doing us any good, I felt,” Harry wrote. “We weren’t getting anywhere.”

The meeting became even more strained when Kate reportedly confronted Meghan over a remark she believed crossed a line.

“You talked about my hormones. We are not close enough for you to talk about my hormones,” Kate is said to have told Meghan, referencing a comment Meghan had allegedly made about “baby brain” following the birth of William and Kate’s third child Prince Louis.

Harry claimed Meghan was taken aback and explained that it was simply a common way she spoke with her close friends, meant to be lighthearted, not offensive.

According to Harry, Prince William then intervened, pointing at Meghan and calling her “rude”. He reportedly accused her of violating British etiquette.

Meghan allegedly responded: “Kindly take your finger out of my face.”

What did Queen Camilla say about Harry and Meghan’s wedding?

There is no official public statement from Queen Camilla specifically about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding.

She attended the ceremony at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, alongside other senior royals.

In his 2023 memoir Spare, Prince Harry doesn’t quote Camilla directly about the wedding, but he paints a complicated picture of their relationship, implying mistrust and tension.
