Prince Harry's 'embarrassing' blunder on first date with Meghan Markle
Harry was running late to the date in the summer of 2016!Prince Harry and Meghan Markle embarked on their first date nine years ago.
Next week, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will celebrate their seventh wedding anniversary. They married at St George’s Chapel on May 19, 2018.
As they approach their seventh anniversary, let’s rewind to the summer of 2016 and revisit their first date during which Prince Harry suffered an awkward blunder…
How Prince Harry and Meghan Markle met
In their 2022 Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, the couple recalled their first meeting.
The pair’s first date took place in July 2016 in London. Meghan, 43, admitted that before meeting Harry, she was “intent on being single” and just having “fun girl time” with her friends.
But then Prince Harry came into the picture, which Meghan admitted was a “plot twist”.
I was panicking, I was freaking out. I was like sweating.
Harry, 40, explained: “Meghan and I met over Instagram. I was scrolling through my feed and someone who was a friend had this video of the two of them with a Snapchat filter, dog ears.
“I was like, ‘Who is that?!'”
Meghan then explained that her friend had messaged her, saying Harry had asked about her and wanted to meet.

Harry and Meghan then arranged to meet for drinks in London. However, when the date came around, Harry suffered an awkward gaffe – he was running late!
Meghan explained in the Netflix docuseries: “You were late! I couldn’t understand why he would be late. He kept texting, ‘I’m in traffic, I’m so sorry.'”
Prince Harry continued: “I was panicking, I was freaking out. I was like sweating.”
Meghan said: “I didn’t know him so I was like, ‘Oh is this what he does?’ This I’m not doing.”
Chuckling, Harry asked: “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Meghan replied: “Like one of those guys with so much of an ego that any girl would sit around and wait half hour for you. I was just not interested in that.”

The Duke of Sussex said: “Then I walked in a hot, sweaty, red ball of mess.”
Meghan laughed: “You were genuinely so embarrassed.”
The date went well, with Meghan describing Harry as “fun” and “refreshing”. She said they were “childlike” together.

Meghan left the date after an hour, but they met up the next night for dinner.
And let’s just say, the rest is history!
The couple now live in California with their two children – Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, three, – after stepping back from senior royal duties in 2020.
