Meghan Markle was reportedly set to feature on the cover of Vogue in September 2022, however, a string of shock demands led to the magazine’s editor in chief, Anna Wintour, reportedly slapping the duchess with a “ban”.

Here’s an inside look at the alleged drama that led to a “frustrated” Wintour pulling the plug on the duchess’ big opportunity.

Meghan Markle’s ‘shock demands’ over Vogue issue

Meghan and Vogue UK editor Edward Enninful reportedly planned for the duchess to featured in the magazine in September 2022. The issue would have also featured coverage of Meghan’s appearance at the One Young World Summit in Manchester.

However, Meghan reportedly had several demands that there was “no way” the editor would have agreed to.

The duchess had allegedly wanted to be on the cover of both the UK edition of the magazine, and the US edition. However, both editions already had their cover stars sorted (Linda Evangelista in the UK, Serena Williams in the US).

“Meghan asked for control over photographer, writer, final edit, photos, cover lines, and wanted a global issue,” a source told Page Six.

“Nobody gets that. Not even Beyoncé,” they added.

Anna Wintour ‘banned’ Meghan from having the cover

Now, according to the Daily Mail, Meghan’s demands “[bleeped] off” Anna Wintour to the point where she “banned” the duchess from being involved in the magazine.

According to a source, Meghan became “difficult about making it a cover” and her team were “insisting on particular straplines”.

“Anna heard about it, and just like banned her and said, ‘That’s it. We don’t want to do this.’ And so she didn’t get the cover, and I guess she didn’t even get the story,” the source then said.

The insider added that Vogue UK editor Enninful “probably agreed with Anna that you don’t get to call the shots on who’s on the cover”. They said: “That’s absolutely an editor’s decision.”

They added: “Anna was [bleep] off. Anna was frustrated with all the micromanaging, and just was like, ‘All right. That’s it. She can’t have the cover and we’re not doing the story.'”

Meghan’s team had ‘high expectations’ for the Vogue cover

However, according to other sources, Meghan had a relaxed view on being in the magazine with “no expectations”. But, her team are believed to have had “high expectations”.

It’s been claimed that the project about Meghan’s work would have required a full production team, including photographers, videographers, stylists and editors.

The team would have filmed an “in-depth” video feature with the Sussexes. Meghan’s team had reportedly also hoped she and Harry would appear on a special digital cover of Vogue, which is released alongside the print edition.

Anna heard about it, and just like banned her.

However, Enninful declined this suggestion. He reportedly felt it wasn’t “appropriate” to give Meghan the cover.

This drama reportedly led to Meghan and Enninful falling out.

“Edward was furious to have lost the project, as were the powers that be at Condé Nast. The whole process became very difficult. Edward could only promise her a big showy feature inside the magazine and online — but she turned it down,” a source told the Mail.

Before all the alleged drama, Anna had reportedly said Meghan would be a “dream” guest at the Met Gala – a prestigious fashion event which the Vogue icon hosts each year.
