Prince William could end up taking on more royal work despite his father King Charles’ “strong work ethic”.

The king, 76, became monarch in September 2022 when his mother Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96, following a 70-year reign.

But last year, King Charles was diagnosed with cancer and briefly stepped back from duties to focus on his treatment. Now, the king balances his duties with his treatment including some overseas trips this year.

But, according to a former royal worker, this could change in the future as the king gets older.

Prince William to ‘take on more’ royal work as King Charles gets older

Jack Stooks, King Charles’s former senior gardener at Highgrove, has discussed the change that could happen.

It comes as King Charles and wife Queen Camilla have jetted off to Canada for a two-day visit. During the visit, the king will open Canada’s Parliament – only the second time a monarch has done this. His mother last did it in 1957.

Speaking on behalf of Genting Casino, Jack said: “Charles is known for his strong work ethic and love of royal duties, often travelling the world for engagements. Queen Camilla isn’t a big fan of flying, but once they arrive, they settle in well.

“Their recent trip to Italy showed them laughing and enjoying each other’s company. Travelling together clearly keeps them going, but as Charles gets older, he may start to ease off, much like the late Queen did.

“Eventually, Prince William is expected to take on more.”

Will King Charles abdicate?

Since King Charles’ cancer diagnosis last year, the Prince of Wales has stepped up and taken on more work as he prepares for his future role as monarch.

Some have wondered whether the king would ever abdicate the throne and let William take over.

But according to Grant Harrold, who served as Charles’ butler from 2004 to 2011, abdication for King Charles simply isn’t a path the monarch would consider.

As Charles gets older, he may start to ease off, much like the late Queen did.

Speaking on behalf of Prime Casino, Grant said: “Abdication? No. Just like his mother, he’ll continue to serve until his final breath. That sense of duty is ingrained in him – it’s who he is.

“No one truly knows what’s going on in the King’s mind, but from what I saw – and I don’t believe he’s changed in this regard – abdication would be the very last thing he’d ever consider. It’s just not in his nature.”

King Charles has ‘put things in place’ for when he can’t carry out duties

It seems the king has a plan in place if he ever got to a point where he couldn’t perform his duties.

Grant added: “Charles has already put things in place in case he is in a position where he is unable to carry out duties himself. He’s appointed Princess Anne, Prince Edward, Queen Camilla, and I believe Sophie as Counsellors of State.”

This means they can perform duties on the king’s behalf.
