Meghan Markle has opened up about the unexpected challenges behind the scenes of her lifestyle brand, As Ever, revealing the emotional toll and “many tears” she’s shed as she navigates the world of entrepreneurship.

In a conversation on her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder, with Tina Knowles, the matriarch of the Knowles family, Meghan reflected on her entrepreneurial journey.

She shared how the excitement of a sold-out launch for As Ever came with complications.

Meghan Markle shares ‘tears’ over As Ever brand

“For me, at the moment with As Ever, it was… great, we plan, we planned for a year, and then everything sells out in 45 minutes. Which, yes, amazing. Great news,” Meghan said.

However, the Duchess of Sussex also revealed that the quick sell-out sparked concerns for future launches.

She said: “And then you say, ‘Okay, we planned as best as we could. Are we going to replenish and sell out again in an hour? Or is that annoying as a customer?'”

Rather than rush to restock, Meghan said she’s taking the careful approach.

Meghan explained: “I’m looking at it, saying, ‘Just pause. That happened. Let’s wait until we are completely stable and we have everything we need.’ You’re trying to balance inventory, cost… at least our things are shelf stable.”

But that end game… those behind-the-scenes moments, how many tears I’ve shed.

Tina, mother to singer Beyoncé, shared that her haircare brand, Cécred, has also faced challenges, including customers frequently complaining about products being sold out.

“That’s another thing,” she said. “Ours have a shelf life of three years. So your time is ticking. Everything you’re saying it’s the part of business people don’t see.”

“They see all the flashy stuff, and they see the product,” Meghan agreed. “But that end game… those behind-the-scenes moments, how many tears I’ve shed.”

The pair discussed how initial scarcity, where products sell out quickly, can create buzz. But Meghan made it clear she wants As Ever products to become everyday staples.

The duchess said: “That scarcity mentality at the beginning might be a hook for people, not dissimilar to a sneaker drop. But when you’re talking about products… I don’t want you to eat that jam once every six months. I want it to be on your shelf all the time.

“You want us to wash our hair with these products all the time. So trying to keep up with that demand… It’s really helpful for people to have that insight. No matter who you are, that part of the process as an entrepreneur is not easy. That numbers game.”

Tina Knowles on ‘bonus’ episode of Confessions of a Female Founder

This bonus episode with Tina Knowles came as a surprise after Meghan’s original eight-part podcast series had wrapped.

Lemonada Media, which produces Meghan’s podcast, teased the final episode last week.

“We had just wrapped Confessions of a Female Founder and packed up the mics, until a call came in that we couldn’t ignore,” the company wrote in a social media post. “On the line was one of the most influential and inspiring matriarchs in culture today. Naturally, we hit record.”

Speaking to Marie Claire about the final episode, Meghan described it as the “perfect end to a very special podcast”.

“As I grow my own business, As Ever, I spoke to women who had turned their own entrepreneurial dreams into reality,” Meghan added. “Ms Tina’s conversation fulfils the promise of the podcast, offering extraordinary advice and sharing insights about being a working mom, building something special, and remaining true to herself through every twist and turn.

“This episode proves to be a powerful toolkit of truths that I will apply to my own life as I, too, grow my business, care for my family, and look forward to new adventures.”
