Royals meet a lot of interesting people, from heads of state in other countries, politicians and celebrities. Therefore, when they do meet someone important or well-known, it’s always well documented. But when Prince Harry met Cillian Murphy at a film premiere, it went viral for other reasons.

At the time the Duke of Sussex was still a working royal, and it was just over a year after his relationship with Meghan Markle went public.

Set 10 months before his wedding, he attended the star-studded event, and would have no idea royal fans would still be discussing it eight years later…

When Prince Harry met Cillian Murphy

Cast your mind back to the summer of 2017, the world premiere of Dunkirk was celebrating the film’s release at Odeon Leicester Square in London.

Among the famous faces seen was Prince Harry, who met the cast of the hit wartime flick, including Cillian Murphy.

However, their meeting sparked fans speculating the royal did not make a great lasting impression on the Hollywood actor.

The interaction was caught on camera – in the video below – however, due to the noise in the area it was hard to hear what they were talking about.

There was no signs of negativity or hostility in the conversation, but it appears when Prince Harry moved on to speak to other the cast members, Cillian Murphy appeared to give him some side-eye.

Although, it’s more likely that fans at the time – and even years later – are reading more into the situation than what happened.

During their exchange, the Oppenheimer star is seen smiling and laughing with the royal so it doesn’t appear to be any bad blood.

Royal fans joke it’s about history

When the viral moment was shared once again on TikTok, fans were quick to crack jokes and come to their own conclusions.

Some hinted at the historical conflict between Britain and Ireland.

One Prince Harry fan said: “That’s 800 years in 1 look if you know you know,” referencing the 2006 film about the Irish War of Independence, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, which Cillian Murphy also starred in.

Another suggested it was the actor’s ‘resting-get-me-out-of-here-face’ and says he often has a blank expression.

Others also spoke about how Cillian had his hands in his pockets, but in reality, it seemed to just be a comfortable stance for the star.

Edited video claimed Cillian Murphy had ‘corrected’ Prince Harry

However, doctored clips of the meet went further, by adding edited audio on top to claim Cillian Murphy had a spat with Prince Harry.

The video did the rounds again in 2023, months after the royal released his memoir Spare.

The fake clip played a transcript from another Cillian interview, claiming he corrected the prince when he called him ‘British’.

In the edited video, it was made to look like the short conversation was from the same event, when in reality it was a 2010 interview with an Israeli journalist.

In the original clip, the journalist refers to Cillian and co-star Tom Hardy as ‘British’, which Cillian corrects them by explaining he is Irish.

The journalist responds: “Ah yeah I know, British”.

But Cillian clarifies once again: “No, no, no. I’m Irish. It’s a big difference”.

The audio was from an interview as part of the Inception press call for the 2010 Hollywood blockbuster, and was published by Hot – Israeli entertainment channel, in July that year.

Cillian was born in Douglas, Ireland, a suburb of Cork city, and Ireland is an independent country which is not part of the UK, like Northern Ireland is.

Even more so, Prince Harry wasn’t present in the Cillian Murphy clip from 2010, so the fake video went viral.
